After three years of low rainfall the 1983/4 winter was wet, cold and humid; this weather pattern continued well into the Spring of 1984 and the vines were behind in their flowering and general growth. The weather continued in this fashion until the late summer when it completely changed and right up until the beginning of the vintage, in late September, the Douro region was blessed with exceptional hot and sunny weather.

The bunches of grapes were well formed, almost free of any disease, although a little lacking in natural sugar content. The wines showed good colour and body.
