Winemaker’s Notes

Vintage 1999

The 1999 vintage was a result of the best crop we’ve had through all of the 1990’s. The good rains in late Winter and early Spring and the more moderate temperatures through February, really suited production of high quality white wine. From the crop levels to the style, 1999 was almost a mirror image of 1979 – Plenty of colour and varietal character. All the fruit for Vat 1 was handed picked off Tyrrell’s oldest and best blocks of Pokolbin Semillon, which all feature sandy, well-drained soil.

Picked in the first two weeks of February in almost perfect conditions. The wine was crushed and the fi ned prior to fermenting under cool conditions in stainless steel, spent a short period on gross lees, and then three months on secondary lees before it was fi nally racked for bottling in late July. The next six years were then quietly spent in a dark, temperature and humidity controlled cellaring facility at the winery before being released. 10.3% Alc Vol
