This wine was 5 years past it's drinkability window when I decanted it, but I was surprised at well it has stood up. I'd say that owes largely to the fact that it was a gift from my parents that had always been cellared properly. Anyway, on decanting, the nose was rich in dark fruits with cherries leading the charge. The color of the meniscus was a medium orange/brown/brick color. Wine was very dark and inky with a fair amount of sediment making it through the decanter and into my glass. After 30 minutes, the dominant cherry had blown off quite a bit and revealed some beautiful anise and oak notes. Medium body in the mouth and very pleasant, big flavor. Tannins were subdued to the point of compromising a little of the body in the mouth. An hour after decanting black fruits began to show up on the palate and although the finish was short the wine was a wonderful experience.

I didn't expect much from this wine. It's well past it's prime, but had been cellared properly, so we gave it a try. Ruby color, wonderful smoky nose, earthy, cigarbox and spice. On tasting, nice feel in the mouth. Red fruits up front, medium bodied, well balanced tannins and acid. finish was blk cherry and cassis. Overall it was a pleasant experience and I'm sure it would have been wonderful 8 years ago.
