Tasted by jefstar on 12/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Rich, resolved and within its drinking window. Dark fruit and leathery (822 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 8/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Drinking well. Bold but smooth. Mix of red and blue fruit. (1121 views)
Tasted by Hover low 64 on 12/15/2022 & rated 91 points: Nice red from Carlisle that makes me think “subdued”. Fairly powerful nose of darker fruits leads to an actual flavor of lighter ones: cherry, raspberry, along with some pepper to keep it interesting. Decently medium finish. We have been waiting to drink a Two Acres for several years. Summary after the long wait: Very smooth with lighter tannins and a “softer” taste profile that feels subtle and sophisticated. (988 views)
Tasted by Tbaum2 on 12/25/2021 & rated 93 points: Paired with a Christmas leg of lamb, this presented not overly fruity, with nice body and nose. (1221 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 10/14/2021 & rated 91 points: Always one of my favorite Carlisle reds. Excellent (1460 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 9/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Raspberry and cranberry fruit, leather and spice. Drinking quite well with some air, so best to decant a couple of hours if you can. Drink now - 2030. (1189 views)
Tasted by rougeamore on 6/12/2021 & rated 90 points: Blackberry and cherry fruit on the palate. Smooth and balanced. Medium bodied with mild tannins. Excellent accompaniment to BBQ chicken. (1310 views)
Tasted by Brhouts on 5/23/2021 & rated 91 points: Great blend (1216 views)
Tasted by Robwild on 1/2/2021 & rated 91 points: Juicy nose. Dark ruby color. Well balanced with mild tannin, medium bodied. Lots of fruit with plums, cherries raspberries a bit of vanilla and tobacco. Jammy and chewy. (1113 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 12/16/2020 & rated 90 points: Earthy wine. Not as fruity as a zin-based field blend. Didn't love it as much as Bedrock field blends. Good, not great (936 views)
Tasted by mwrock on 11/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Nose is full red fruit with earthy notes, taste is tight light cherry, stems and balanced tannins. Finish is long and strong, but beautiful. Enjoyed with some cheddar popcorn (1169 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 11/5/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted 90 min. Day 1 this was locked up, not offering up much in the way of flavor or body. Let it sit in a sealed 375ml for a couple of days and by day 3 it had awoken! Raspberry and cranberry fruit, notes of cigar tobacco, white pepper and saddle leather. I'd recommend sitting on this one for another couple of years...drink 2022 - 2032+. (1063 views)
Tasted by Winowhyno on 9/17/2020 & rated 89 points: Unique taste. I will stick to their Zins in the future. (1238 views)
Tasted by mpricher on 8/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Phenomenal vintage. This could’ve held up another couple years no problem. Bright and lunch blue and red fruit, bramble and maple notes. Meaty. Lively and rich. Frank half, vino-corked and left for 2 nights and came back not expecting to be as good... was better. (1235 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 5/27/2020 & rated 93 points: The most rustic of the Carlisle field blends, this one is drinking very well, with cherry, bramble, white pepper and dark chocolate. Great depth and length, will get even better with time. (1171 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 5/27/2020 & rated 91 points: Just a little alcohol pokes through here that’s a bit destraxting. But this is a really nice Rhône. Has a bit of iron mixed with a somewhat rustic fruit style. Has a nice core of spice and white pepper too.
Surprisingly, R liked this better than me. (1322 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 5/15/2020 & rated 93 points: really smooth, has pepper, dark red fruit and a little floral nose (1001 views)
Tasted by ravbik on 5/10/2020 & rated 93 points: Wonderful well balanced wine (972 views)
Tasted by Slaz on 12/1/2019 & rated 89 points: Ripe, alcoholic, and overly fruity. Tasted over 3+ hours of decanting. (1620 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 11/6/2019 & rated 93 points: Rustic yet so appealing south of Rhone blend. Always one of my favorite Carlisle's. (1431 views)
Tasted by ThisIsAlan on 10/20/2019 & rated 91 points: Nose of black pepper and cherry. Palate of black fruit, with some subtle sweetness balanced against a hint of anise. Very enjoyable. (1459 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 10/15/2019 & rated 91 points: Ruby red and softer textured than expected. More savory than fruity. Comes across like a high end CdR. Finishes with a hint of creaminess (if that makes any sense!). A nice example to the Two Acres. (1471 views)
Tasted by pgm on 7/22/2019 & rated 92 points: Powerful nose of blackberry and kirsch, with woody spice and intense dry garrigue notes, like a young Beaucastel CdP. Pure black and red currant and berry fruit on the palate, with the spice coming back through the finish. Drank best on Day 2, so drink now only with a long decant, and consider waiting on these for a few more years. Should have a long life. 92+ (1840 views)
Tasted by chanote44 on 4/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Smooth and sexy. (1901 views)
Tasted by DougSamuel on 3/5/2019 & rated 92 points: Note from last weekend, but this wine was realy interesting. Smooth and chocolatey with some cherry and kirsch. Very easy to drink and nice fruit flavors and a creamy mouthfeel made me feel this was ready to drink now. It may well last another decade, but it's not something I can see waiting on - its delicious as is. Really terrific wine and so glad to see varietals and wines like this out there. Cheers to Carlisle! (1877 views)

2016 Carlisle Two Acres

Release Letter:
Two Acres is back! It broke our hearts not to bottle this from 2015 but for whatever reason, the vines simply weren’t able to fully ripen the fruit that year. Fortunately, there were no such problems in 2016. In fact, it was even one of those rare vintages in which all varieties were ripe at the same time. As a result, given our love of cofermentation, all varieties were picked on the same day and cofermented together. After 22 days on the skin, the wine was pressed to all French oak, 22% new. Neither fined nor filtered.

Tasting Note: Medium-dark to dark ruby-garnet. Sensuous, perfumed aromas of spiced cherry, tree bark, and cardamom. Wonderfully luxurious on the palate with a mouthcoating texture unlike any other wine I’ve had from California. Intense flavors of blood, game, cherry, and spice carry through the long and gently tannic finish. I love this now but it will go the distance. Drink from 2020 through 2030.

Carlisle Two Acres

Two Acres – Russian River Valley

A true gem in Sonoma County! There is little old-vine Mourvèdre in Sonoma County. Yet, here we have two acres of predominantly mourvèdre planted in 1910. Other varieties planted include Petite Sirah (10%), Syrah (6%), Carignane (4%), Peloursin (3%), and Alicante Bouschet (2%). There are also a few zinfandel vines in addition to nine whites of a variety called Helena (a white cross of Zinfandel and Mondeuse Noir).

This vineyard was on the brink of death when we took it over in 1996 but slowly and surely we have brought it back to life. We completed its renovation in 2003 by replacing all missing vines. Most of the replants were Mourvèdre but we did include a few syrah vines.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
