Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Alex H on 1/5/2012 & rated 87 points: Rustic backward style of Italian wine. Musky dusty with chicken fowl feathers. Rustic with dirty mushrooms and old cupboard cherries. Good ole traditional stuff. (3723 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 12/29/2011 & rated 92 points: Post "Wicked" Pizza Dinner (Pizzeria Mozza, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore): I thought this was really nice. I loved the classic Chianti nose here, with dusty earth and leather, slightly horsey, barnyardy notes and a lovely bit of dusky dark cherries and black berries. With time, the savoury, slightly Bretty notes receded slightly to show scents of dried flowers and spice in the background. Lovely, masculine stuff. The palate was really fresh for a 1997, without the heavy, roasted fruits that you sometimes get from the vintage. Instead, there were juicy gobs of dark cherries, black plums and blackberries touched with fine tannins at the midpalate and bits of spice and savoury meat, leather and mushrooms and a damp woody linger towards the slightly shortish finish. Very nice apart from the lack of length. As would be expected, this went great with pizza. A really nice wine at a very nice place now. (4232 views)
Tasted by pcarmich on 3/6/2010 & rated 91 points: This is truly beautiful. The nose is layered and subtle, with truffles, figs, cherries. The palate is just as interesting with layers of dried fruits, tobacco, leather. The tanins on the finish are elegant and rounded out with good acidity. The finish is only medium-long but that's just nit-picking. (4304 views)
(4324 views)
Tasted by pcarmich on 6/7/2009 & rated 91 points: Nose of prunes and black olives, with a fair amount of dried figs and cedar box. On the palate, the initial dark prune gives way to leather and tar and a fairly long finish on wood. A nice acidity balances the still rather firm tannins. A beautiful wine that gains from just a few minutes in a decanter. Very food friendly. (4544 views)
Tasted by BradA on 8/16/2007 & rated 90 points: Dang if this wasn't just a dandy of wine! Bought years ago in Madison Park at Bert's. Highly rec'ed by the wine steward--at $20 it seems like a steal now.
Bright red rim and good clarity; some VA on the nose, but nothing too strong. Rich, warm fruit balanced with smooth tannins and a tasty twang on the finish. I would suggest drinking up if you have 'em as the wine is really smoothing out as the night progresses.
This wine would have blown away all the Brunellos at last weeks tasting (not to mention at a fraction of the price). (2213 views)
Tasted by Easter Everywhere on 10/1/2001 & rated 90 points: Deep purple, slight bricking, nice aromas of cherry, earth, rose, black cherry, cocoa, light toast, licorice, mushroom, blackberry, full bodied, dark cherry, chewy, slightly rough tannins emerge on finish, but juicy throughout, just right on the oak, thick & viscous, room filling aromas, good balance w/ plenty of acid and tannins left, would last a while longer (597 views)

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
