Tasted by MattB72 on 11/27/2022 & rated 93 points: At 30 yrs ago old i didn’t think this would need a lot of air but it definitely did. On open, at first it seemed way passed its drinking window but I recorked it and put back in the cellar. I tried it again the next night any it pulled itself back together and was really good. Definitely at its peak but not the initial disappointment I thought. Very well made cali cap blend. (767 views)
Tasted by G_H on 10/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Needed quite a bit of air to open up. Started out with wet socks and medicinal, but developed into a mature Napa beauty with some etheral notes, cassis and blackberries. I would drink this now, as I think it is at its best. (866 views)
Tasted by Otaku Oenophile on 4/25/2019 & rated 85 points: A cross of cherry cough syrup with fresh tart cherries with gorgeous leather, red currants and a pile of autumn leaves.

High acidity and interesting for how it holds up for it's age but I don't take much interest in this.

Pretty sure the newer vintages would age better than this.

PS cork was absolutely saturated and crumbly with signs of seepage, however ullage was very good. (1833 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 2/20/2018: Poured alongside a '95 Caymus SS. More necrotic than the Caymus (and possibly less well-stored), with more red fruit, baked yam and terra cotta notes. Also some bay leaf and candle wax. Good, but faulty. (2289 views)
Tasted by achasd on 7/16/2017 & rated 91 points: It was a magnum so it showed the characteristics of this great vintage. Shows that California wine can age well. Great color, balance and the cigars we love from cab. (2629 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 6/29/2015 & rated 88 points: pleasant for an hour and then faded (3417 views)

Tasted by mwanasheria on 11/22/2014 & rated 91 points: California treasures in an unexpected place (Fulda): Nose slightly dusty. On the palate still attractive fruit of strawberry and cassis, some mint. (3505 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 2/22/2012 & rated 92 points: Sampled 2/21/12 from MAGNUM. Cork was very soft but came out whole. Color showing a little sign of age but no bricking. Took only about 30 minutes to fully open. I suspect the 750s are well on the downside. Beautiful soft and elegant overripe red fruits and red currant with blackberries underneath. A little eucalyptus/menthol to mix with some muted cedar and herb notes. Finish was a little short (15 seconds) and the mid palate was not as full bodied as the start and finish, but still an excellent wine with some well balanced complexity. (4594 views)
Tasted by SkiJunkie on 12/24/2011 & rated 88 points: Past it's prime. This used to be one of my favorites. Tonight this wine was no match for the Justin Isosceles that followed. (4397 views)
Tasted by Barnaby33 on 7/2/2011: At first I thought, this wine has passed. Letting it sit open for 30 minutes the fruit does revive a bit. Much more reminiscent of Dunn's tannic style than the last two bottles. Some leather and tobacco and of course tannin followed by a mellowed fruity nice that was light but still present. (3796 views)
Tasted by Barnaby33 on 6/2/2011: Drank a second bottle, two remain. This had more fruit than the first, but certainly needs to be drunk up. Smooth is the theme. Its tannins are smooth, there is still some fruit and there wasn't a noticeable green element. (3836 views)
Tasted by Barnaby33 on 8/30/2010: Drank at dinner. Still has some primary fruit and plenty of tannin, but definitely on the backside of its life and should be drunk in the next year or two. (4185 views)
Tasted by Vinomarcus on 4/7/2010 & rated 82 points: Wednesday Night Blind - April 2010 (Peter Pratt's Inn): Blind Wine #2 - I brought this - The cork broke and then crumbled trying to take it out. It had a nice color, dark red with some orange edges, some notes of soy, tea leaves, pine, hints of muted fruit, very much past its prime. At this point I'm praying my third bottle will be the charm. (3835 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 4/8/2009 & rated 90 points: @ Chez Ehrenrreich Passover Seder w Todd, Jamie, Matthew(4), Samantha(2-1/2), Linda, Jamies Mom from Brighton Beach, and Hellen, Jamie's 90 yr young Grandma.Good but past its prime, was eclipsed by the 92 Philip Togni's intense mountain fruit that showed more depth and intensity. (3800 views)
Tasted by EhrlichDY on 3/14/2009: Still showing some clean pure Cali fruit but transitioning and also showing some earthier notes on the nose and palate. the wine was still enjoyable but it's time to drink these up in my opinion. (3780 views)
Tasted by Faryan on 3/14/2009 & rated 93 points: More obvious expressions of California fruit. Big lush, hasn't evolved into secondary nuances too much! Still tastes bright and yummy. This wine was probably a monster as a child! It was a polished and bright wine. If you enjoy the style, definitely something to seek. (3083 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 3/12/2009: My notes would be more like Tyvoodoo. This is a very nice mature wine, with pleasant restrained flavors. Not especially rich, but really a very pleasant bottle of wine. (3543 views)
Tasted by tyvoodoo on 8/9/2008 & rated 89 points: Very similar showing to my last bottle. Slightly muted and dusty nose. Nice sour fruits on the nose including cherries and cranberries. Cellar dust on the nose as well. Nice tobacco and spice on the palate. Decently long finish with a medium body. Some green peeked its way through, but faded in the glass. In a nice spot right now, integrated, decently complex and layered. (3840 views)
Tasted by tyvoodoo on 7/17/2008 & rated 88 points: This was decanted one hour and served with porterhouse steaks and corn. Exhibits nice aromas or ripe red fruits on the nose, mostly sour cherries and raspberries. Small amount of green on the nose, cabbage stock. Neat cellar dust note followed by shaved baking chocolate. Palate was interesting with massive amounts of sour cherries and tart strawberries. Cedar box and tobacco dominate the finish. This wine seems a tad out of balance like its better days have passed. Still not a bad bottle, holding up decently. I would drink up!! (3653 views)
Tasted by TKendrickIV on 4/2/2007 & rated 94 points: Great wine - still a nice bite would drink it all soon (4123 views)
Tasted by Michael on 3/8/2005 & rated 94 points: Smooth, balanced, enjoyable, ready to drink, plenty of fruit. (4715 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
