Tasted by jfslikeswine on 4/10/2024 & rated 94 points: What a beautiful wine! Took this to dinner with some co-workers and it did not disappoint! This is a big and bold wine that has aged gracefully. It could have stayed in the bottle a year or two longer. It opened up after about 30 minutes. (289 views)
Tasted by Andreessen on 3/21/2024 & rated 96 points: damn. absolutely stunning. had this wine in a lineup with SQN, Ehrlich, Vinum Dei and this was just showing fabulously well. Ehrlich and Vinum Dei, are new producers in Napa, and Vinum Dei was the wine of the evening but the Pahlmeyer was a close second. beautiful aromatics, rich mouthfeel...jam, spice, black fruits. tightly wound, still a baby. beautiful.  Tasted by cubswinws on 2/2/2024 & rated 93 points: Big bold Napa cab with solid fruit core but a bit heavy on the oak for my taste. Still quite young. No rush on this one. (684 views)
Tasted by Markjams on 12/25/2023 & rated 96 points: Outstanding with Christmas steaks! (698 views)
Tasted by suarezd on 12/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Needed 30-60 minutes of air to open up. Complex fruit, medium tannins. Very good, but not outstanding. (1025 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 9/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Am I losing my loving feeling for Napa? This was a bit to fruity, a bit to sweet. Say it isn't so... (1298 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 7/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Not sure it gets much better, absolutely stunning right now.

Tasted by Hi.its.Don.4.Wine on 10/25/2022 & rated 96 points: Greatness Continues (DDF)

In my review of the first Napa Cab enjoyed by myself, my daughter, and her fiancé, the 2012 Stewart Cellars Nomad, I mentioned the impact of that great vintage along with the winemaking abilities of Paul Hobbs. Today’s wine transitions from that beautifully balanced and slightly more demure vintage to 2013, where fruit took center stage and wines became even bigger and richer in style, if that’s even possible.

What better choice for 2013 than the likewise Bordeaux-esque wine:

Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 2013

All mountain fruit, mostly from their estate vineyard with additional fruit coming from Rancho Chimiles and Stagecoach vineyards, is composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot, we were once again regaled by this Bordeaux-styled wine, that for lack of a better descriptor was a “showstopper!”

While still in its youth, the wine was bright and full of wonderful acidity, firm tannins, and the all-to-present 2013 extracted fruit of cassis and dark blackberry and blueberry were offset by what some might call crushed stone, I use the term earthiness or rustic. On top of all that, the wine lingers on your palate for what seems like ages.

As is my custom, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Pahlmeyer had been acquired in 2019 by E. & J. Gallo and have yet to try the wine since that acquisition and the winemaker has changed a couple of times since 2013. Although from the reviews, it seems as though it continues to shine.

Tasted by rbrater on 10/3/2022 flawed bottle: On the nose, the bottle is very slightly corked. On the palate, still enjoyable but might be missing a bit due to it being slightly flawed. (2246 views)
Tasted by capacious on 5/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Pahlmeyer is reliable year after year, always a crowd pleaser. Not for those who only love old world, this is full of sweet fruit, mouth filling luscious. Wouldn’t hold long, for me it’s where it should be. This isn’t built for secondaries. (2802 views)
Tasted by tdurst on 5/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Did not disappoint; very nice, smooth, and big, without being overpowering; would have been even better with more breathing time (2425 views)
Tasted by PhilOSU on 2/2/2022: Fulmer stole it lol (476 views)
Tasted by capacious on 1/21/2022 & rated 93 points: One of our favorite Calif cabs, this has been reliable for decades. Young at this point, it is still eminently drinkable now with an afternoon decant. Mouthfulling, classic California, beginning to edge to the expensive side but I’ll continue to buy my annual case, and I do less and less of that at this age (74). Proprietary red is always a crowd pleaser, and so everything older is already consumed. (2988 views)
Tasted by Agunner23 on 12/5/2021 & rated 93 points: I think the wine is at its sweet spot, very juicy, and the tannins are well rounded with a 15 to 20-second finish with minimal acidity, enjoyable wine to drink by itself. I don't know if I would pay $180 for it because I got it for $120 a bottle, and I think it performs great at the $120 price point. I will be picking another bottle or two up and seeing if a couple of years will do anything, which I don't suspect it will need since it is already eight years old. (2598 views)
Tasted by Agunner23 on 12/5/2021 flawed bottle: Corked, wine saturated 90% of the cork. Sad. I will get an exchange. (2378 views)
Tasted by Markie_Sharkie on 10/19/2021 & rated 94 points: Dark violet color. Nose of blackberry, cedar, hint of licorice. On palate similar blackberry, slight licorice. Medium finish. Better after 4 hours open (no decant) and still solid on second night. Lots of time left. (2205 views)
Tasted by 1964vintage on 4/16/2021 & rated 96 points: In a beautiful place right now. Outstanding. (3056 views)
Tasted by Ricky99 on 12/7/2020 & rated 94 points: huge firm tannins gripping here... fruit working its way.... should be special (3406 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 11/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Drank over several nights. Coming together better than the bottle from several years ago which was overly tannic and burly. In line with most notes of dark berry, licorice, cedar. At this point not enough here to justify the high price for me but this seems like it will go for a long time so I'm going to put my other bottle in deep storage and forget about it for a decade or more. (3309 views)
Tasted by jcampano on 10/2/2020 & rated 93 points: Floral aromatics with black fruit and pencil lead. Black cherry and licorice with cedar and light oak. Edgy tannins, this wine needs at least 3 hours in a decanter. Drink over the next 5 - 10 years. (3265 views)
Tasted by vpoms on 3/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Opened this bottle by mistake as I had 2007 and 2013 on the same shelf. Nevertheless, I very powerful and enjoyable wine. I think it need a few more years in the bottle before it reached its full potential. (4015 views)
Tasted by Kenny_Powers on 12/31/2019 & rated 93 points: One of my favorites. Tastes like great wine. Too drunk to come up with anything clever...at least that's what my wife is telling me. (3759 views)
Tasted by KTelaak_Buffalo on 11/8/2019 & rated 95 points: I think it's spectacularly big and bold. Fruit forward and a pleasure to offset some oak on the mid-palate and the finish. If you like deep, dark and bold, this is your wine. No noticable tannins. Drinking great now. (3679 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
