| Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 32 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Marc on 10/2/2013 & rated 88 points: Typical peaches and cream with plenty of lightly toasted sweet oak and fruit on the nose. Ripe, spicy (clove, cinnamon) mouth with generous oak that has a beautifully resolved finish built on its echo of oak. This is attractive, old school California chardonnay that has always delivered the goods. (3538 views) | | Tasted by Tiderunner22 on 8/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Very nice California chardonnay. Balanced with buttery oak finish and great fruit. Always delivers an enjoyable experience at a great value (3458 views) | | Tasted by Sebacca on 6/9/2013 & rated 90 points: Excellent value, wonderful chardonnay (3926 views) | | Tasted by EvanJB on 1/17/2013 & rated 89 points: - Light gold color - Nice wine (4587 views) | | Tasted by VeniceCalif on 1/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Pale lemon color. Nice nose of stones, cloves, ripe white peaches. Pleasant, somewhat honeyed texture with flavors of petrichor. Not tart but not buttery either, nicely balanced. Finishes with oak notes. Solid. (4495 views) | | Tasted by Mrbuzz on 12/20/2012: Worth buying! (2343 views) | | Tasted by AndrewR on 5/14/2012 & rated 91 points: A steal. Bit oaky and American but simply delicious. Drinks way above its class and would please, literally, all palates. (3384 views) | | Tasted by jeffal66 on 4/17/2012 & rated 91 points: Lean and taut, a little green, just the right balance for a Chard. Hint of butter, minerals, an alert wine. I would drink this variety more if other vintners followed this mode. (1205 views) | | Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 4/5/2012 & rated 87 points: Bready nose mixed with slight sour yeasty tones, before offering up oak and apples. The initial impression on the palate is a complex mix of tropical fruits, butter fat and acids. Medium bodied, short finish. Smoke or oak not particularly noticeable. Acid keeps it drinkable but I wish there was more "there" there on the finish. I always liked these guys better when they were independent, about a million years ago, huh Mac? (3249 views) | | Tasted by v0max on 3/19/2012 & rated 92 points: Very rich and buttery, but still with floral notes (2920 views) | | Tasted by joshwoodward on 11/18/2011 & rated 88 points: Pnp. Definitely Californian, which I always hope to avoid with Chalone but never seem to get. Still very tasty, though. Definite butter, but not overly oaky. Fairly big body. Concentrated flavor, but not overly complex. Tasty quaffer, and a good deal for $16. (3279 views) | | Tasted by mjnickel on 11/5/2011 & rated 89 points: The oak is balanced very nicely with this juicy chardonnay that leans more the tropical style. Nice acidity and just a touch of butteriness keeping it smoothed out. (3479 views) | | Tasted by Zinlady on 4/4/2011 & rated 88 points: Had at GiGis Asian Bistro with a spicy shrimp and scallop dish. Went fine but probably not best food pairing. Wine was refreshing. Not oaky (3299 views) | | Tasted by tantotinto on 2/23/2011 & rated 88 points: Going from memory here but this seems to have less chalky minerality and more tropical fruit than did the 2007 and 2008. They could have been mistaken for Burgundy. Not so the 2009. This is generic California Chardonnay, well made but not particularly distinctive. | Chalone Vineyard Producer websiteChardonnay The Chardonnay GrapeUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Central Coasthttp://www.ccwinegrowers.org/links.html
