Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 88 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by KingsIndian on 4/25/2024 & rated 88 points: 'Left-field' whites (TWS North London) (Must and Lees, Liverpool Road): As expected, a strongly nutty, mushroomy nose but with baked apple and some curranty sweetness, perhaps raisins, followed by iron, bread, some herbs and a vegetal character on the palate - limited in fruit at this stage but some lemon and bitter orange. (154 views)
Tasted by awitz78 on 9/30/2023: Cloudy, cork in great condition. Not oxidized. Nutty. Enjoyed it with pan fried sole. (333 views)
Tasted by rmarcos on 4/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Creamy and balanced. Apricot, apple and herb notes. Great with food (1801 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 4/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Been cellaring this for 11 years. In that time, I've moved 5 times, my wine has moved 3 times, and I've often wondered why I keep this around, having been relatively unimpressed with my first taste of this circa 2009/2010. But now I know why (I was told why a decade ago, but it was all on faith. Now I know my friends weren't just pulling my leg. Thanks, guys!)
14 years past vintage, this is akin to drinking a heavier, more perfumed white burgundy. The color was bordering on orange, and that unctuous oiliness I recall from 9 years ago has been replaced by a lovely palate weight without the oil. The flavors are more in harmony, the alcohol is seamlessly integrated (before I thought it stood out too much) and honey and almond flavors have emerged. This was gone almost immediately after opening - Chris wondered where we could get more. (2601 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 9/3/2017: Some nice nutty characters, but this carried too much oxidation for my palate. (3612 views)
Tasted by ProfByron on 8/19/2016 & rated 92 points: Another reminder for me that CNdP is (or can be) an elegant wine, both red and white. This was charming where I was expecting that it would be impressive but a bit aggressive. Perhaps charm is the hallmark of all great wine?

Soft acid but everything balanced. Absolutely for drinking now, but I expect that this is deceptive and this it may last a while. If I had to guess this wine I'd like it was a Marsanne, some hidden treasure from central Victoria, Australia.

13.5% ABV, sealed with cork. (4769 views)
Tasted by danibus on 7/29/2016 & rated 94 points: Wow really great. Lemon custard, honeysuckle, minerals. Top notch material and still youthful tension, seems like it could go another 10 years but so delicious and balanced and complex right now. Very impressive showing. (4593 views)
Tasted by hunteje on 12/5/2015 & rated 94 points: Blackberry, black cherry, tobacco (4354 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 5/11/2014 & rated 93 points: Apricot fruit. Nice spice note layered on a light bodied, well integrated backbone of crisp minerality. A nice contrast to some bombastic Cali white Rhones we've recently consumed. The alcohol is well in check, this is nicely balanced. This was nice at cellar temperature. (5893 views)
90 pts (5067 views)
Tasted by LARich on 1/4/2014 & rated 93 points: Beautiful balanced wine with honeysuckle and lavender nose followed by a medium bodied finish. Still fresh with plenty of time left. (3682 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 12/29/2013 flawed bottle: oxidized (3065 views)
Tasted by Deadhead on 11/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Deep golden color, well balanced. Wonderful nose - melon, citrus, and peach/pear. (3114 views)
Tasted by denver81 on 11/2/2013 & rated 88 points: flavorful, smooth, (2214 views)
Tasted by Deadhead on 8/5/2013 & rated 90 points: Was pleasantly surprised - wasn't really sure what to expect... Deep golden color. It really opened up after some time in the glass. (2148 views)
Tasted by dkfinancial on 6/1/2013 & rated 90 points: Drinking well now and has some years ahead. Pure yellow stone fruit (plum, pear) and lots of minerality. Long finish. Well made and balanced CdP. (1570 views)
Tasted by Porchino on 2/16/2013 & rated 89 points: Lost to 06 napa silver oak (2724 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 2/2/2013 & rated 93 points: Opened by Allred at Bill's. Slight petrol on the nose, along with lemon oil. Viscous citrus with lemon peel and lengthy finish. (2423 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/2/2013 & rated 93 points: Light yellow color. Quince, almond, salted butter, and waxy white fruit. Slightly viscous, oily texture with flavors of melon and quince. After a couple of hours, this really blossomed. Lemon, quince, mineral and waxy white fruit aromas. Diesel and stone flavors along with plenty of fruit. (2460 views)
Tasted by Border Boss on 9/10/2012 & rated 94 points: From magnum. This has a tremendous nose of tropical flowers and fruit. Maybe the best nose I've ever experienced from a white wine. The flavors were forward with melon and apple with some good minerality and acid to give it some backbone. It's an amazing wine that should last for years, but it drinks so well now that I don't think I would wait. Excellent! (3256 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 8/25/2012 & rated 91 points: Dinner with Mike Grammer (Pera, San Francisco): Brambly red fruit, baked red cherry; tannic, young, needs time to flesh out, red cherry fruit, very good clean acidity; medium length finish. In a somewhat awkward stage. Broad range of scores for now... the wine will declare itself. 88-92 (3591 views)
Tasted by denver81 on 4/19/2012 & rated 92 points: Drank with Fritz and Ulla. Very good. (2843 views)
Tasted by tendring on 11/14/2011 & rated 90 points: Wine Education Service - Châteauneuf du Pape (LSE): Tawny, just opaque.
Fruity, understated nose.
Delicious, strong but gentle tannins, fruity mid palate, very long. (1679 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 11/4/2011 & rated 90 points: Second time round, I'm less confident how to score or evaluate this wine. Now mid-gold, this retains the odd talcum/vanilla/sherbot nose I recalled last year. It is just so extracted (and concentrated) on the palate that with my eyes closed I'd guess that I was drinking a red wine. I expect that finding the perfect food combo could transform this unusual wine into the stratosphere, and perhaps also it warrants a lot more time. (3456 views)
Tasted by agebob on 9/4/2011 & rated 93 points: Notes consistent with previous tasting. All in I prefer it younger because of the freshness. That said, it's given up very little with age - coming together nicely, but still fresh and vibrant. In a few more years it my display the grace that comes with age of a white CdP. Too bad I don't have more, but no regrets about drinking this beauty right now. (3236 views)

(BLANC Telegraphe La Crau CdP) Focus Dear Friends, Today's weekend list has a few amazing deals, especially the Friday Focus wine, the 1998 Pruno. This library release has been aged under perfect conditions and the wine is at peak - a great opportunity to purchase aged wine that you can open tonight. Also, more Vieux Telegraphe Blanc - the 2005 is simply amazing wine. Have a great weekend everyone - - Jon Rimmerman ******************************* Friday Focus: 1998 Pruno (Tenuta la Palazza) STRICT LIMIT 6/person Despite a name that conjures up images of shriveled, dried fruit, this wine is anything but. From the mostly unknown Italian region of Emiglia-Romagna, I pulled a bottle of this from my cellar last night and it was just terrific. It's not often that you hit a wine at peak (or very close to it) but this wine is a real pleasure right now and a large contingent of you would feel very fortunate to have this in your midst for a special night. It combines the qausi-Bordelaise style of the best Tuscan wines with a more silky, exotic Cubano-laced personality from the soil and climactic differences in Emiglia-Romagna versus Tuscany proper. This location, on the eastern side of the Apennine mountains makes all the difference (Tuscany lies below and to the west of the Apennines, which trap far more rain and inclement weather). While not a shy wine, the Pruno acts like a mix of Valendraud junior and Solaia with a good dose of breed and elegance. This parcel is directly from the source with perfect provenance. Parker's drinking window estimate was very conservative - the wine is drinking superbly right now and has buckets of life left in the tank. We have an excellent price on this wine, even less than in Italy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED **************************************** Friday Focus #2: 2005 Vieux Telegraphe CdP "La Crau" Blanc (W93) STRICT LIMIT 6/person This would have been the Friday Special if I had enough quantity but I can say this with confidence - the 2005 la Crau Blanc is going to bowl people over - it's that good. I would rank this as one of the finest unheralded wines on the market and more of you need to discover its grandeur. This is a wine that will make you rethink your buying strategy with regard to grand cru white Burgundy (after trying this ). NO ALLOCATIONS, the margin is too small: **************************************** 2002 Domaine des Aubuisieres (B. Fouquet) Vouvray "Plan des Jean" STRICT LIMIT 3/person Speaking of dessert wines, this is a vessel for the cellar and it's from the top 2002 vintage - a steal at this price for Moelleux. Allow at least 6-10 years in the cellar. Only 10 cases for the entire US. 2006 Balboa "Cat's Meow" (Walla Walla) STRICT LIMIT 3/person Looking for everyday domestic wine? Lots of you will really like this Malbec blend... 2004 Colin-Deleger Chevalier-Montrachet STRICT LIMIT 2/person 2004 Sauzet Puligny Montrachet "Les Combettes" STRICT LIMIT 2/person Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy8601 Rhone7799 Loire9170 WA7990 Burg6370 Burg6380

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
