Tasted by G SQUARED on 12/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Despite the corroded capsule, low shoulder fill and cork that too easily pushed into the bottle, the wine was marvelous. This was one of the RC (Reserve Chateau) bottling and as always its seductive profile was loved by the group. I doubt this will get better with age but still enough acidity to last a decade or more. (1395 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 7/3/2023 & rated 89 points: In magnum. Consistent with previous note. (2531 views)
Tasted by Peech on 6/22/2023 & rated 92 points: served without decanting. Nice nose with some sweet grass, some cigar smoke, a hint of earth, which was just as it should be. Also leather and grilled meats on the nose. Acidity was a little higher now. (2095 views)
Tasted by Venice Al on 4/21/2023 & rated 95 points: Chagall label! This was stored in Los Angeles professional storage since 1986 and before that in San Francisco professional storage- not by me, but I know the whole provenance well. Significant bricking on the rim. Translucent in light, but deep garnet in room lighting. Intact cork with Durand and mid shoulder fill. Classy claret! Nice Red currant, sour cherry, tobacco, earth, cedar, dried flowers, leather, flinty mineral, and sous bois. Tannins fully resolved. Good fruit and acid balance. It was a great showing!!!!! I’ve had this wine from various sources including mine over the last few years and this was undeniably the best! Long finish and NO stewed fruit. I would not hold, but if this bottle was 5 years more it would still be impressive.
Happy and great with Flannery Beef! (2635 views)
Tasted by WinoRick on 4/17/2023: Purchased on Ebay 30 years ago as I was trying to collect a full vertical of Mouton Rothschild. I ended up with two and with a marginal fill this one was relegated to my regular cellar collection. A wine tasting friend replicated the 'Judgement of Paris' blind tasting 3 French vs 3 California cabs.
So, I pulled out my 2nd '70 Mouton since it actually was one of the French wines in the 1976 tasting. Label by Chagall. This bottle had a mid shoulder fill, and good color: medium garnet with moderate browning around the edge. So I was hopeful, but the fruit was 90% gone as were any tannins. Acidity was nicely balanced and my other bottle might live up to prior CT ratings. Fun for all at the tasting. (2675 views)
Tasted by D'Yquembe Mutumbo on 12/31/2022 & rated 95 points: Lovely experience with this on NYE. PnP, this was ready to go right away but not tired at all, with primary fruit left driving the mid-palate and soy, leather, cedar, legumes, and stewed fruits making up the lovely nose. A great example of a perfectly mature wine that was not showing any signs of demise. (2589 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 11/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Pronounced nose intensity with notes of charr wood, toast, spices, earth, tea, slight cooked black fruits notes left. Medium acidity and medium tannin. (2002 views)
Tasted by Bruce L on 10/17/2022 & rated 90 points: Was surprisingly light for a Mouton. Lovely cedar, pencil shavings but I think I was drinking it 5-10 years pas its prime. (2262 views)
Tasted by Elliot Vale on 9/25/2022 & rated 89 points: Extracted the cork in 3 pieces despite using a Durand. Colour was deep garnet with brick at the edge. Served immediately after decanting.
The aroma was pronounced. Spice, cinnamon and baking spices to the fore. Then also some volatile acidity, burnt toast, plum, black fruit and rosemary (tending towards both lavender and violet).
The mouth was pleasant with echoes of the aromas but not so distinct. Wine was high in acidity and the finish was medium-.
Overall a very nice bottle at 89/100, the spice on the nose was memorable but it should have been drunk a while ago. (1826 views)
Tasted by Beeck10 on 9/12/2022 & rated 94 points: second time this year I tasted this wine,
and again it didn't disappoint , waaauw the nose has some flavors of mint, (strange you would think blind about Haut brion...), tabbaco , still young , the guests/tasters guest 1982 and some 1989 , in the mouth the best is behind but still very enjoyable , (1991 views)
Tasted by Peech on 6/22/2022 & rated 87 points: served 40 minutes after opening without decanting. Level was mid-shoulder so not the greatest. Initially the nose was a little dusty but not corked. Smoky, earthy, a little brett. Improved with aeration and the dusty notes faded away. (505 views)
Tasted by Beeck10 on 4/23/2022 & rated 94 points: we took off for a top tasting with 4 wine freaks !
I had put the wines in the following line up , Mouton 1970, then VCC 1945, then Las cases 1982, to end with Evangile 2009 !
Turned out afterwards that the Las cases would have been better before for the VCC , unbelievable : here are my notes :
Mouton 1970, bottle was perfect, I think the wine is already past its peak, but it is still a very classy Pauillac! In the nose it had some smoked meat
, the texture of the wine in the mouth is still incredible , what a finesse ! wow , the length is not really present anymore , but that makes it just maybe more delicate !
it is still a really nice bottle , we had this with a young milking lamb and it was perfect !
Vieux certan 1945 : what a monster, color was much deeper than Mouton, and from the glass you could already see that the texture was denser! there was a little bit of cloudiness in it , but nothing disturbing !
what a power in the nose, unbelievable, blind I would almost dare to put this on '61, the nose I had leather and even a lot alcohol! in the mouth it was greasy and complex, bwaaa what a wine,
we had this with a pigeon and he went above and beyond ! in my top 5 bottles ever, really unbelievable!
Leoville las cases 1982, bit of a sin for this wine, my mistake, I should have seen it afterwards, always have to open it for the VCC, but on paper this seemed impossible! If you would only drink this wine another night, you really would think
, this is a great bottle and I would probably score it better… The nose, I immediately had chalk and afterwards pencil and graphite, then came some red fruit , under the name of ripe Berry's! but the best thing about this wine is its balance and finesse
something that the mouton also had, but after the VCC this was less appreciated by the other drinkers!
Evangile 2009, which was a blockbuster, was impressed me the most , the wine is very powerful , but is not overwhelming, which you usually have with over mature wine or very sunny years, or at no point did the power came at the expense of finesse, the wine was already ready to drink and
very accessible! lots of violet in the nose and what a monumental aftertaste , but perfect acidity , this wine will last and will be better in 5/10 years, wow , very interesting evening ! (2440 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 1/8/2022 & rated 93 points: I drank this regularly up to a decade ago when it was great value on the secondary market, and it was always reliable and never failed to deliver. I do get the feeling now that it is coming to the end of its prime, but that said it is still a fabulous mature old school Bordeaux. It now displays tertiary notes and the fruit has receded, but the tannin is resolved and everything is in balance with great depth and length. (3119 views)
Tasted by Hanibal on 12/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Crazy how a wine this old is still giving so much pleasure. Tertiary for sure but complex and very long. Drink without food. (3483 views)
Tasted by 559Cheers on 10/19/2021 & rated 96 points: Very fragrant, toast/char still singing, very balanced and integrated. Very nice bottle. Kudos. First night open. Mid-shoulder fill, cork and capsule fully merged together with alcohol loving black mold thriving on angel share volatiles. Cork fully saturated and disintegrated upon use of cork extractor with side prongs. Little iron lingering on palette. Still could age many more years, fruit still there and everything singing. Nose aged Pauilliac with meaty and thus iron notes.
*2nd night still drinking great, notice some green pepper on the palette. Toast blew off, though expected. Mouthfeel and viscosity still holding decently. Tannins coming through more noticeably. (3375 views)
Tasted by colima on 8/23/2021 flawed bottle: This was in my cellar for forty years. It was opened for an anniversary and turned out to be a big disappointment. It had reduced to shoulder level. Some previous notes indicate success in this condition. No such luck for me - the wine was oxidized and bitter. It did have an interesting nose. Sometimes old wines come around after an hour or two - not this one. (3322 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 7/4/2021 & rated 98 points: Low expectations from this auction bottle with a high shoulder fill and light signs of seepage. But Sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle. Cork is soaked through and broke in half with the Ah-so but managed to extract fully. From the first whiff you can tell that this is going to be great. Powerful and complex aromas of flowers, library books and cherries. A faint overtone of balsamic adds depth and character. Brilliant ruby-garnet colored, with barely the slightest hint of bricking at the edges. Palate is archetypal Mature Pauillac and utterly seamless (an overused word, but completely appropriate here). Effortless sophistication, medium bodied, with youthful and vibrant and sappy cherry/raspberry fruit, and a broad supporting cast of savory secondary and tertiary leather-sofa-graphite-black-tea-cedar-mulch characters. A caress of the tiniest bit of unresolved tannin is like a brush of raw silk on the cheek. (3157 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 7/2/2021 & rated 89 points: In magnum. Feminine and elegant palate but clearly off the peak even in magnum. The fruit is thinning out. (2619 views)
Tasted by Peech on 6/24/2021 & rated 94 points: served about two hours after opening, without decanting. Just beautiful, really fragrant, smoky, minty, lovely woodsy notes, along with a little green pepper. Showing so, so well. (2225 views)
Tasted by kevinpatrick on 6/10/2021: Wine Night in Charlotte -- Cork Vault Bottle Share Returns! (Charlotte, NC): Top-shoulder fill. Slo-ox and poured ~30 minutes after opening. Delightful aromas waft out of the glass: dried plum and cigar box. Silky on the mouthfeel this wine was tasty though lacking heft at 50 years of age. Medium body. The wine was balanced and elegant with soft, enjoyable but fading notes of dried cherries, sweet cassis, and earthy bell pepper. Nice, medium finish for a delightful wine still enjoyable if a few years past its prime. (2352 views)
Tasted by Duvnäs Wine on 5/30/2021 & rated 88 points: Past its prime. Still drinkable and rather enjoyable but not if expecting a great wine. (1927 views)
Tasted by lesz on 4/6/2021 & rated 92 points: A little more subdued than I would have expected. Nice but not great (2130 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 4/2/2021: Beautiful mature claret. Fascinatingly more Pauillac than Mouton. Low shoulder fill but gorgeous dark color with minimal fade. And held for 2+ hrs. Nose of used leather and pencil box and hummus earth. Plenty of fruit! Svelte and smooth. A little allspice, dried red currants and pu-erh. All very light and nothing dominant. Medium finish. All around beautiful. (1993 views)
Tasted by eschaefer on 3/1/2021: Drank on my bday. For my birth year. Unlike the last bottle, this unfortunately was gone. Sad but true. (2480 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 1/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Nose: A-/A Palate: B++
My #2, Group's #3 (54 pts). Tasted blind. (2616 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
