Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 70 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bob H on 6/30/2022: Unfortunately, my last bottle. This is a more red-fruited vintage than the 2010 I just tried. Not as expansive on the palate, but this is still a nice drinking wine from a so-so vintage. (849 views)
Tasted by A1002 on 8/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Deep cherry core enveloped in leather, tobacco and funghi aromas.

Cherry continues on the palate which has very weel integrated tannins and a silky feel. This is very delicious now and certainly can keep. But will probably not get much better. (1271 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 5/24/2021 & rated 91 points: My last bottle and it showed well. Light-medium ruby. Bing cherry nose. Unlike some Chiantis, this one had plenty of flesh on the bones to stand up to the acid; one of the better-balanced such wines I have had in recent memory. Piquant, matched marinara sauce wonderfully. Right in the middle of its drinking window I should think. I like the style; not sophisticated or trying to be something it is not, just a nice red-with-pasta kind of wine. 5-12-16-8: 91/100. (1455 views)
Tasted by Jofauk on 4/17/2021 & rated 90 points: Castell’in Villa
Dark cherry, almost forest like with still a kick to the acidty, but very mellow tanins. Great tasting wine. (1341 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 3/4/2021: I guess there may be other producers that folks might consider as (or more) traditional, but more often than not, when I think about what Chianti means to me, Castell'in Villa is the producer that comes to mind first.

And for a middle of the road vintage, this wine is drinking great today - vibrant cherry fruit on the palate, good acidity & persistence - in short, pleasure in a glass. One of my last bottles from a case bought on release, and I will be sad to see these go, as off today's showing, this wine might have another decade of good drinking ahead of it. (1560 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 1/29/2021 & rated 90 points: Clear bright light red. Pure cherry fruit, very clean and fresh. Dry cherry and spice flavours and a dry fresh cherry finish.

Fun to drink. (1285 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 10/2/2020: Not bad, but not the kind of wine that is going to wow you either. There is a candied/confected note on the fruit here that is slightly distracting. Drinkable, but not as good as you would expect from this top flight producer. (1081 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 9/19/2020: This is pretty good. Lighter bodied, red fruited with menthol accents initially. With air, the wine puts on weight and becomes sappy and slightly sweet. This was my last bottle, but if I had more, I would wait a while before opening another. (1021 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 6/21/2020: This might be the weakest wine today of the trio - still credible, but not a wine that will wow you. There are some nice spice scents on the nose, so unique in that regard.

But the palate is somewhat straightforward, so ultimately less interesting than the two previous wines. (1245 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 3/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Praelum TITs - Tuscany (Praelum Wine Bistro): Pale ruby. Aromas of tomato leaves, tomato puree, blackberry, and some rosemary and cloves. Structured tannins, with cherry and tomato flavours, thyme, some meat stew, and a slightly tar smoky end. A pretty long finish. Nice! (1268 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 1/25/2020: From a bottle opened last night.

Cool menthol is most prominent, with red and black fruit in the background.

Pretty tasty, albeit not overly complex. Light-bodied. Not bad, but I just tried a couple 2016's, both of which are tough acts to follow for this wine. (1370 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 12/28/2019 & rated 90 points: Really good value for money - not a lot to add to my other ratings - this is solid 90 (1251 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 11/23/2019 & rated 90 points: We had the wine as one of the last ones in a larger drinking session - as always the wine is living up to expectations - this is really nice and well balanced not a very complex wine - so happy to give solid 90. (1264 views)
Tasted by Jofauk on 10/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Stunning, full, balanced. Lovely. (1190 views)
Tasted by MichelNL on 1/18/2019: Gelukkig liggen er nog meer flessen in mijn kelder! Jeej. In de neus leer, kers. Heerlijk. In de mond een Chianti zoals het heurt. Mooi vol, kers, tabak, milde tannine en een afdronk die lang en mooi is. Dit is geluk in een glas. (471 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 9/1/2018 & rated 90 points: We had the wine after eating - very tasteful and fruity - cherries - and still light and elegant - tannins are medium but perfectly integrated - really good value for money - my favorit chianti. Very solid 90. (1803 views)
Tasted by ikileo on 7/23/2018: Lot of bright red fruit and classic chianti notes earth ad herb notes. Classic medium bodied chianti classico.

This was my 2nd bottle and I learnt from my previous bottle to open this in advance. I double decanted (poured out into decanter and immediately poured it back into the bottle) 6 hours ahead of time and it showed deliciously (1958 views)
Tasted by joostentamara on 5/20/2018 & rated 92 points: Deliscious!
Balance! But also a wine with edges.
Great with food. We had cannalini beans with tomatoes and fresh porcini. This was a great match.
This wine is good now and will be great the next 3 years and more. (947 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 4/19/2018 & rated 91 points: Clear light red with bright pink edges. Intense juicy nose, spicy red cherry, mineral, and red flowers. Delicious red cherry and spice flavours and a hint of earthiness in the background of the nose and flavours. Long dry finish with noticeable acidity.

Very good wine. (2229 views)
Tasted by Lyubomir Lefterov on 4/3/2018 & rated 90 points: Nice traditional Chianti, subtle red berries mixed with forest aromas, good acidity in a medium body. Went nice with our barbecued red meats after an hour of decanting. (2097 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 2/9/2018: Light translucent ruby in the glass; lovely nose - really pronounced red fruits, some earthy notes as well.

Light-bodied, decent acidity, nice persistence - better on the nose than the palate, but all in, very good today. (2047 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 12/23/2017: Translucent ruby in the glass, with a ripe/candied cherry note on the nose that is very appealing.

Light-bodied and focused on the palate; primarily red fruits, with good supporting acidity. A little short on the finish, but all in, pretty good. (1885 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 12/17/2017: This was very good. Slightly lighter in color and less substantial than the Felsina CCR. This one had a brighter, more lively nose showing mentholated cherry. Lighter mouthfeel and perhaps more acid than the Felsina. Some licorice accents. A very pleasant wine that is drinking well now, whereas the Felsina may need a little more time. Right now I prefer this wine. (1584 views)
Tasted by Gian on 12/16/2017 & rated 88 points: Very high acidity and minerals (1450 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 12/16/2017 & rated 90 points: nothing to add to my last rating (1406 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
