Tasted by AlexPS on 4/26/2024 & rated 93 points: PnP half bottle (coravin). Nose: very good 9/10. Berries, baking spices, (nutmegs, cloves?). Palate: 9/10. Cherry tart. Nice acidity. sweet, bitter balance.. Finish: 8/10. Price: 7/10 ($85, 2024). Enjoyment: 9/10. Would buy again: Yes. Good stuff. (187 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 12/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Really nice, juicy and a little jammy with soft berry fruit, what you'd expect from KB. The Sea Smoke Ten '18 was somewhat boring compared to the KB. B&J xmas party (718 views)
Tasted by JeffaC on 7/29/2023: Skunked (1150 views)
Tasted by gew71walsh on 5/26/2022 & rated 93 points: Nice aromas of cherries and raspberries on the nose. Similar on the palate. Everything in balance. A great rendition of the Pinot grape-this is closer to the Oregon Pinots, than the heavier Calif. Pinots. Goes great with food—in this case an Asian style beef dish. Nice finish. (2261 views)
Tasted by Tsbjoe on 4/23/2022 & rated 91 points: Initial flavors of strawberry, cherry with a spice finish all within about 20 minutes of decanting. After an hour the spice was less pronounced and mellowed nicely and the strawberry flavor became more prominent. Very nice. (1972 views)
Tasted by cc.smith44@gmail.com on 3/30/2022 & rated 90 points: a big sonoma expression. Larger blackberry and pepper but still well balanced (2113 views)
Tasted by wendyinwlv on 11/28/2021 & rated 94 points: Very nice! The extra year really helped. (2194 views)
Tasted by VAGenius on 11/21/2021 & rated 94 points: Nose of baking spices, cherry, cranberry, and bit of lemon peel. Rich layers of black cherry, plum, red licorice and rose water with a crisply acidic unerbelly. Super-elongated, ethereal tannins on the finish with red fruits, light earth, and raspberry. Super gentle and super smooth. (1920 views)
Tasted by greg@newsomehh.com on 11/8/2021: Brought to Yellowstone premier party just had a taste, everyone enjoyed (1435 views)
Tasted by ELH on 8/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Bright fruit, cherries and strawberries. (1486 views)
Tasted by DWStyle on 7/21/2021 & rated 93 points: Approachable now but should be awesome with some more bottle time 2-4yrs (1602 views)
Tasted by RossS on 5/3/2021 & rated 90 points: cola earth tone (1378 views)
Tasted by Schiffy on 3/14/2021 & rated 93 points: Bright, sweet cherry fruit. Cola, oak and a touch of smoke on the finish. This is silky smooth, delicious and becomes significantly better after a three hour decant (1633 views)
Tasted by adon on 2/26/2021 & rated 94 points: Red fruit; cherry, strawberry, kola. Great balance. Long finish. Never disappoints (1586 views)
Tasted by vino_per_tutti on 11/26/2020 & rated 89 points: Lovely, red rose color with perfect symmetry in the pink meniscus. Heavy, sweet and dusky black cherry on the nose; sweet cherry flavors, some cola on the palate. So far so good. Sharp, tart and slightly bitter finish that causes one to pull back and wonder what went wrong. Four of us at the Thanksgiving table reported a similar experience. To summarize: gets through 1 and 2 nicely, but hugely disappoints on 3. Wonder if this needs more age, or this is what you get with Keefer. (1610 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 11/16/2020 & rated 94 points: Deep dark red hue. Cherry, red fruit nose. Dark cherry, smooth, jammy, dark strawberry, little spice, full bodied. Drinking nicely. Drink with or with food. Reliable KB-- always putting out great juice. (1775 views)
Tasted by wendyinwlv on 11/6/2020 & rated 80 points: Super, super bright and a bit on the astringent side. Didn't get much fruit, so I think we should wait a while to try the next bottle (1315 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 10/30/2020 & rated 92 points: singing on the 3rd day
this should be left sleeping in the cellar (1151 views)
Tasted by gpcoleman on 10/23/2020 & rated 93 points: needs decanting. Better after 30-45 minutes decanting. (1171 views)
Tasted by EpochMD on 10/1/2020 & rated 93 points: Nose of orange peel, strawberry, cherry, the palate consists of a touch of smokiness, cherry, and hints of herb and spice right toward the medium finish. Really nice (1095 views)
Tasted by Sfflyer123 on 9/19/2020 & rated 88 points: This is a nice pinot, but definitely not worth the $128 price tag. The 2016 Kistler Russian River Pinot for $60 is actually a better wine and for 1/2 the price. I've had Kosta Browne Pinot and Chardonnays, and for the money, I have not been impressed. This wine is just okay. I would not want seconds. The acidity is high, complexity is low, the the fruit is medium. I would describe the wine as medium bodied with lots of acidity--almost sour. I almost feel that as I am drinking it, I am inducing a headache. (1263 views)
Tasted by EpochMD on 9/14/2020 & rated 94 points: Cherry and a hint of red apple on the nose, silky body with notes of cherry, pepper, and touch of orange, starts out as a Pinot with a heart of Grenache; after a few hours this transforms and gets much darker, with a little more broodiness and that deep cherry continues on day 2, with most of the pepper and orange departing; really delicious, drinking well now. 94. (1284 views)
Tasted by peterg2004 on 8/29/2020 & rated 90 points: Soft light and mellow for a kB very unexpected (1197 views)
Tasted by DrLes on 7/25/2020 & rated 92 points: Mineral, cherry, almost the perfect Russian River, to me. (1209 views)
Tasted by wino_tim on 7/22/2020 & rated 88 points: Nearly deep red. A forward and deep nose offers aromas of mostly dried and jammy red cherries, strawberries, black raspberries, cream cheese, lilacs, sassafras, toast and oak spice. Nearly full bodied with medium+ acid, this is round and rich on the palate with sappy red fruit and cola flavors. Honestly, there's nothing wrong here, but this is not particularly interesting; there are dozens of wine that offer what this does for a fraction of the price. (1354 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Keefer Ranch Vineyard

Keefer Ranch is located in the Green Valley appellation in the southwestern corner of the Russian River Valley. The 30 acre vineyard is located on gently rolling hills in an area known to have some of the coolest weather in the Russian River Valley. Morning and evening fog, gentle afternoon breezes, cool overnight temperatures and warm afternoon sun produce grapes with terrific natural acidity and a combination of elegance and intensity. Marcy Keefer and her son Craig Strehlow grow some of the best Pinot Noir grapes in Sonoma County and we are proud to have them as members of the family. The site has a superb micro-climate, offering just the right amount of warmth during the day and very cool nights, which leads to intensely focused red fruited wine with strong natural acidity.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
