Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Diane (LI) on 2/19/2023: The aromatics are stunning - florals and berries. The palate shows roasted meat, black pepper, and dark fruit. There is a wildness to it. It is so good. (686 views)
Tasted by VoVo on 1/2/2023 & rated 93 points: Absolutely gorgeous. We are sorry they will no longer be making wine, but we will cherish the wines we have left. (702 views)
Tasted by rama on 1/1/2023: Lavender or sage or some sort of bushy flower leaps from the glass. Nice brightness and structure. Savory, and while there is fruit, this is not screaming California, which I mean in the nicest way. The finish is crisp and long. (581 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 12/16/2021: Fast forward to two hours after I opened the bottle. This is very well integrated, and clearly Syrah. Roasted meat, dark berry fruit, a touch of smoke, it’s all there. Still quite youthful, but in a good place for drinking, I would expect this to be very long lived based on the structural balance, and the depth of the fruit. Loving it now. (1232 views)
Tasted by caffers on 11/14/2020: My favorite in a syrah tasting at Dad's (980 views)
Tasted by VoVo on 8/28/2020 & rated 93 points: This wine - like all of Lagier Meredith production - keeps getting better with age. Sturdy, luscious, fruity and balanced all at once. (809 views)
Tasted by pgm on 2/25/2020 & rated 93 points: A musky and floral perfume with blackberry and pepper on the nose. In the mouth it’s got powerful and juicy black fruit with more peppery spice, stemmy vegetal notes, and a long long finish. Excellent, delicious, a very very good vintage for them. Drink, let’s say, through 2027. (1127 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 1/19/2020 flawed bottle: Weirdly tart and maybe VA ... distracting and not up to expectations. (942 views)
Tasted by BigTex22 on 10/5/2019: Outstanding, drank by the camp fire at the cabin. (798 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 3/9/2019: Feels like this is closed in now. The tannins are really grippy, and stunt the finish. The entry is great. Just seems to need time to fan out a bit. (1141 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 6/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby red. Complex nose with black pepper, dark berries and bark. Medium plus tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Rich palate with pepper, savory notes, a touch smokey, cherries, gravel, and meaty. Long finish. Drink till 2028. (1369 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 4/8/2018 & rated 94 points: god this is good stuff. give at least 45-60 mins of air right now, and absolutely no rush to open. polished and poised and elegant, there's not a rough edge here but enough lift and structure to guarantee a long, healthy, beautiful life. (1082 views)
Tasted by MJobes on 3/1/2018 & rated 91 points: Something I’ve been wanting to try for years! Beautiful fruit flavors, not as spicy as some Syrah, with a silky and pleasureable texture. (1122 views)
Tasted by Sixchips600 on 11/25/2016 & rated 92 points: Strong pepper, black and white, nose. Primary fruit and some feral syrah qualities. Nice wine and will take several years for primary fruit to mature. (1718 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 8/6/2016 & rated 91 points: Taste of Mt. Veeder, nose of barnyard, blackberry, and briar, same on the palate, big body, tasty fruit, medium/long finish, needs 5 years to peak. (1690 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 1/11/2016: On the Hummingbird heights - A visit to Lagier Meredith, a small mountain vineyard; 1/10/2016-1/12/2016 (Mt. Veeder, Napa, CA): Bottled mid 2015. Tasted in Dec 2015.

Blue/black color. Dark and savory fruit with forest floor, black olives, and some funk. The restive aromatics are quiet for the time being. In the mouth an explosion of primary fruit and feral flavors, deep and long, with concentrated flavor, abundant acidity, and long-haul tannin. Preferably in the cellar for 5 to 10 years, but by no means harsh or without immediate appeal. A 24 to 72 hour decant is recommended by Lagier Meredith at this stage for the wine to bloom fully. Likely 92-94. (2021 views)

Lagier Meredith

Producer website

"Syrah is our flagship wine. We’ve grown it since we began in 1994. Our vineyard site, with shallow rocky soil derived from an ancient uplifted seafloor and bathed in cool marine air from the nearby San Pablo Bay, brings out the best of Syrah’s savory, spicy, and floral attributes. Our wines are balanced, complex and long-lived. They reflect the restraint imposed on the vines by our mountain setting."

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
