Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by nigelb on 7/30/2023 & rated 91 points: Lovely. Fruit rich and ripe. Beautiful texture - soft, pliable yet solidly "there". (448 views)
Tasted by winespine on 12/24/2022 & rated 94 points: Absolutely lovely, it was everything I hoped it'd be when I pulled it from the cellar. At 15 years old, it's in great shape: the colour is holding well, and there's still lots of fruit here. Decanted, but not for long, and served with Christmas Eve cannelloni. From 30-40 year old vines in their vineyards southwest of Gaiole. Malo and maturation are both largely in barrique, 20% new, 80% used for maturation. Forest floor, dark cherries, a hint of baking spice, and the oak had integrated beautifully. As expected, it was a great pairing for the cannelloni. (738 views)
Tasted by Vasily on 10/24/2022 & rated 92 points: Cork in better shape than prior bottle. Color slightly bricked but nose and palate were good. Some cherry. Good acidity. Paired well with pasta bolognese. (758 views)
Tasted by Vasily on 4/24/2022 & rated 88 points: Bottom of cork crumbled on extraction, although most was intact. Lots of sediment and orange brick color. Wine itself wasn't bad but not at all what we expected. It seemed a bit tired and without a lot of fruit. Two more bottles so maybe this one was just off. (1034 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 11/15/2021 & rated 91 points: This is much better as a Priorat or Toro wine than a Chianti. Dark fruited, concentrated with a modicum of acidity makes this a non-Chianti in my book. Nevertheless, this is delicious like F**K and very early stage maturity.

If you're looking for a classic Classico, look elsewhere.

Don't think I'd even get the grape right in a blind tasting... (1343 views)
Tasted by Markjams on 3/8/2021 & rated 94 points: Drinking beautifully. Definitely some years left in it as well. (1323 views)
Tasted by AndrewDand on 3/19/2020 & rated 94 points: Beautiful wine paired with a chicken sausage pasta dinner. Definitely in the drinking window, wouldn’t hold much longer. Tannins are well integrated, smooth. Medium long finish. Dried figs, cherries and a hint of floral. Leather, Clay, Brick, Tobacco, Smoke and Oregano. (2076 views)
Tasted by nigelb on 1/31/2020 & rated 87 points: just not doing the job for me. (1563 views)
Tasted by onboisduvin on 7/30/2019 & rated 90 points: A competent table wine can be cellared for more time. (1665 views)
Tasted by rpontual on 4/6/2019 & rated 93 points: Dark red fruit and leather on the nose. Good body and well balanced. Dark red color, early signs of yellow at the borders. Good time to drink it or perhaps wait another year. (1501 views)
Tasted by Cipivts on 9/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Medium ruby garnet, the aromas need a bit of time to clear the barrel odors but after 40‘ they open up with a great mix of black cherry syrup, cocoa, herbs and balsamico. Acidity is crisp and clean, the wine shows its signs of aging but still drinking beautiful right now (1520 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/19/2018: From a library release from the winery.

Tobacco and savory on the nose, but to me the earthy tobacco is not my jam. And still with good acidity and some tannins. This is on day three so I wonder what it would be like on day one. Janice thinks the palate on this is really impressive.

Actually this is just opened. (1158 views)
Tasted by Joe Kane on 9/19/2018: Very savory. Dried herbs, mushroom stock, dried cedar, stems, stewed tomatoes. Palate is killer, really balanced, round, and soft tannins, acid is just elevated from medium. Herbs and earth and showing really well on palate as well. (983 views)
Tasted by CompleterZRH on 9/4/2018 & rated 91 points: Wonderfully aged Chianti. Tannins as soft as velvet, dark, ripe fruits (cassis, blackberries) and a fine leather note as well as hints of oranges and spices. Nice balance of sweet and sour (balsamico) parts that contribute to the joy of drinking this wine. I guess it shouldn't age much more, but is in a great spot right now to entertain happy palates over the course of an evening. (748 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 5/7/2018 & rated 90 points: Weekly tasting group RWP #285: A mixed set (@ BS): Garnet brown color. The bouquet is a bit sweet with autumn forest, mushrooms and some graphite. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, good vanilla from the oak, chocolate, autumn impressions again, good acidity and a touch of sweetness. Some drying tannin. The wine will probably improve with more ageing. Would like to try again around 2023. 90+? (1146 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 7/8/2017 & rated 90 points: I finally came to terms with this wine. My final bottle was still showing a lot of 'stink' in the nose, but boy was the mouth (finally!) different. Alive and kicking, acidity and secondary flavors. No sign of that exhausted tertiary phase that plagued the previous 3 bottles.

Where these off bottles or did I drink them too soon? I guess I will never know... (1413 views)
Tasted by Rexel on 7/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Perfect drinking window, solid and very good structure.
Note, one more btl, drink latest 2018 (1155 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 6/26/2017: Over the top and going downhill fast (1164 views)
Tasted by nigelb on 12/31/2016 & rated 91 points: Lovely tea toned nose. Silky texture with ripe tannins. Fresh, and long finish. Worth savouring, complex. (1370 views)

Castello di Ama

Producer website
Location on Google Map

Castello di Ama’s 65.38 hectares of specialised vineyards, officially enrolled in the Chianti Classico Register, are located at elevations between 390 and 530 metres in calcareous-clay, pebble-rich soils.
Part of the vineyards were planted between 1974 and 1978, at an average density of 3,000 vines per hectare, while newer plantings at a density of 5,300 vines per hectare, starting in 1996 and continuing to the present date, replace the outdated vineyards.
The vines are vertically trained, to the open lyre pruned to the Guyot system, and to spurred cordon.
The varieties, grafted onto rootstock 420, are 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
