Magnum - perfect fill and cork, first mag out of 6 and it's just a great Bordeaux of Bordeaux in a great vintage, the balance is stunning, came out quite 'pomerol' in the nose and hard to get the Pessac to start with, after 45/60 mins it became very classic, tobaco, leather, and did not show any sign of weekness, it got with air more and more deep and gained in volume, brillant !

Tasted by Cailles on 9/3/2022 & rated 94 points: No notes taken. Like many 1985s, this is drinking at its peak. Wonderful, telltale Mature Pessac aromas of tobacco, with some leather and truffles notes as well as a dark fruit and minerality core underneath. Fine, mature, light frame and feel. Good tension upon opening, this faded a bit away, lost aromatic intensity and structural integrity with more time in the glass. The first 20 minutes, this was a 95+ pts experience with missing additional complexity for a higher rating. Afterwards it declined quickly into anonymity.

Decanting: No decant needed. (1813 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 9/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Tasted at Le Clarence in Paris. Aging notes dominate with underwood, sous-bois, tobacco, dried earth and mushroom notes. Fruit of mixed forest berries was still present and added life to the bouquet. Palate has sufficient freshness and also still had some fruit left underneath the aging notes. But the harmony and balance were rather wobbly and the structure felt quite vulnerable. Drinks amazingly well for an aged Bordeaux, but would only double-decant briefly and try to consume swiftly.  Tasted by Bordhead2000 on 3/3/2019: Wow, what a difference a bottle makes. Nose of leather, sweet cassis, berries. Color is beginning to brick a little. Taste is balanced acidity with red berries, soft and not over powered; tobacco, earth. Not a finish to speak of, can’t find tannins, but the acid lingers in mid/front palate in a comforting manner. Solid bottle. (1920 views)
Tasted by Bordhead2000 on 3/2/2019 flawed bottle: Nose of over ripe plums and raisins. Undrinkable. (1832 views)
Tasted by BuzzzzOff on 6/16/2015 & rated 92 points: A corkage free evening finished with this sipping now, but will lay down another 10+ years luvly drop. We had to decant as we were at a restaurant and did not have time to let it breathe in the bottle. Never mind, but it only started achieving its potential at the 3 hour mark. Aromas of schoolboy memories of old books in the library along with leather and dark chocolate. Tannins still have good grip, but not overwhelming. Perfect balance. Powerful finish. A winner!  Tasted by dmatley on 12/5/2011 & rated 91 points: Bonham's Pre-Auction Wine Tasting (San Francisco, CA): Tannins just about completely resolved. Drinking well right out of the gate. Excellent balance. But as time went on it seemed to be less impressive. A solid bordeaux but I expected more. (5663 views)
Tasted by thomasito2001 on 10/28/2008 & rated 89 points: A bit disappointed with this bottle. Even though there was nothing wrong really, the wine had a fairly simple Cabernet nose, even 24 hours after opening. In mouth, although the tannins had almost completely melted yielding a vigorous and velvety structure with nicely matching acidity, the aromatics remained pretty simple and not as distinctive as for example in Pape Clement 1988. There was very little evolution in the color and there is a distinctive tightening in the finish, so maybe this wine is still too young? (4454 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
