| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by JohnMcIlwain on 2/10/2024: Given that I live less than a mile from the ocean, I really ought to drink more Muscadet, especially considering how much I’ve cellared over the years (a lot). And with that in mind and a chance encounter with some beautiful looking halibut cheeks at the fish market, I pulled a bottle of Luneau-Papin 2002 L d’Or from the wine fridge. And I’ll be goddamned, this is a beauty! Forsythia yellow/just hinting at gold robe. Upon opening the nose is pretty, dynamic, and pure—no, is-it-corked-or-old-Loire here, thank you very much. Aromas of wet stone, just barely ripe orchard fruit, and preserved lemon on the nose, with just a whisper of petrol, but more sweet summer lawn clipping and lawn mower gas than Formula 1. The palate shows nervous tension and is just uncoiling with salted pear, bits of iodine and Meyer lemon flavors vying with notes of quinine and bee pollen. This is ripe and nearly round (for Muscadet) but there’s a satisfying cut and precision that moderates the ripeness, as if gaveling the yellow fruit to order. Splendid with pan-roasted halibut cheeks with brown butter and capers, and carrot purée with honey, and Cara Cara juice, as well a charred broccolini with lemon and anchovy. But if you have a chicken needing roasting this will perform with élan at the very least. (Maybe highlight the bird with a piquant salsa verde.) Fine, fine bottle purchased as a young(er) wine professional quite a few years ago. Thanks David Lillie and perhaps Lyle Fass(?). Age your Muscadet, friends! (243 views) | | Tasted by DaleW on 5/9/2022: Nice showing- citrus and saline, fresh but with plenty of complexity, long. All one can expect for aging a $12 wine. A- (566 views) | | Tasted by Nanda on 3/1/2019 & rated 85 points: Tooch Going Away Dinner (TDS): Tired and overly mature nose. Palate is waxy and flat. Well past peak. (1529 views) | | Tasted by acyso on 3/1/2019 & rated 85 points: A farewell to Tooch (Chicago, IL): Not a fan of this at all. Fairly oily with some nutty and waxy qualities on the palate. High-toned, with some Sharpie marker/organic solvent tones, and the alcohol seems like it pokes through a little bit on the finish. (1980 views) | | Tasted by cfk49 on 8/5/2018 & rated 90 points: Salty and austere, remarkable freshness for a 16 year-old white. (1658 views) | | Tasted by cfk49 on 2/9/2018 & rated 89 points: Gold but not dark in color. This wine is still firm on the palate with some minerality and some salinity. It hasn't necessarily improved with aging, but it has shown its ability to age well. (1562 views) | | Tasted by LW31 on 12/7/2017: Wonderful tonight. Very fresh, rather angular at first, but then broadening a touch with wonderful lemon, chalk, and mineral notes. Lingering finish. Still in great shape though probably best to appreciate in the next 2-4 years. (1336 views) | | Tasted by tdelorme on 11/29/2017: I was surprised this didn't show more age, it was fresh as a button. Great acid and verve. Chalky minerality, brine/saline and citrus notes. Really impressive, might be the best bottle of the 02 I have had to date. (1469 views) | | Tasted by sawira on 10/24/2017 & rated 93 points: Bottle #4 of 7. Still fresh and young. Very light pale yellow. Super aromas and palate of sea breeze, razor sharp acidity, lemon zest, and a creamy, long finish. Superb. (1169 views) | | Tasted by LW31 on 9/23/2017: Quite classic aged muscadet. Elegant, light but concentrated, saline and mineral notes, with some fruit emerging as it warms. Judging from other notes here this is on the downward from peak as the acidity was softening and first 20-30 minutes were the strongest. Still, a clear case of well made wine, and further proof for me that good muscadet is probably best under 15 years age. (962 views) | | Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 9/13/2017: My last bottle, and that's perhaps a good thing as it is starting to show signs of the back end of its development. Deep gold, with the lovely salinity and toastiness of past bottles, but also with some oxidative almond and orange peel notes. Drink up. (863 views) | | Tasted by jmht on 9/7/2016 & rated 91 points: Fantastic wine consumed over two days and showing no sign of "fatigue"-- nose of lemon zest and honeysuckle; palate of lemon, honeydew, and this mid-palate sneak attack of sage/verbana or some savoury floral element and long lemon drop finish. Beautiful-- wish I had more! (1237 views) | | Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 5/27/2016 & rated 90 points: Drank over one hour, so did not get the benefit of air. Briny lemony goodness in the nose. Medium body, with some toast, oyster shell, lemon. Nice autolytic and mineral notes. Still quite young and primary. Nice finish of lemon and saline. (1277 views) | | Tasted by salil on 5/27/2016 & rated 89 points: Still incredibly primary and youthful, almost to the point of seeming a bit one-note in its bright lemon and mineral flavours. It's a classic Muscadet full of acidity and refreshment, but not terribly complex right now. Though given how the '89 showed alongside, maybe this just needs another decade or two. (1741 views) | | Tasted by eluebchow on 4/8/2016 flawed bottle: Oxidized (1424 views) | | Tasted by sawira on 3/29/2016 & rated 91 points: Bottle #3 of 7. Still a tiny bit candied at first, though less than last time. This still needs time. Bright, pure, citrus and honeydew-oriented muscadet, with less seabreeze and acidity than I would like, but I know that will come with time. Maybe a bit closed right now on the PnP. (1455 views) | | Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 8/17/2015: Lemon, lime, yeast; some richness and florals. Quite nice, though not as amazing as my last bottle. (1447 views) | | Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 6/1/2015 & rated 93 points: Flowers, rocks, and lemon & lime, beach, saltwater. Rich and creamy on the palate. Medium-plus acidity. Very long finish. Fantastic with butter-rich crab. Excellent. Acquired in a mixed auction lot for $14 a bottle, and that is an AMAZING QPR. Improved over two hours with air. Drink now or hold. (1656 views) | | Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/31/2015: MuscaDay 2015: A beautiful L d'Or, tons of cut and verve. Saline, chalk, intense and brisk with candied lemon, apricot, oyster shell and lots of potpourri and spice. So alive and bright, years ahead if cellared properly. (2136 views) | | Tasted by WST on 4/15/2015: Really beautiful. The years have smoothed the sharp edges, but it still has the muscadet verve, cut and minerality. I need to age more of these. (1794 views) | | Tasted by yofog on 3/8/2015: Killer wine that is barely beginning to mature, showing the beginning hints of butterscotch (aided by the distinct saltiness of the minerality), plus lime, grapefruit, orange peel, it's zesty, direct, and mouthfilling with perfect poise. (1568 views) | | Tasted by acyso on 12/18/2014 flawed bottle: Blind Dinner at Browntrout (Chicago, IL): Served blind. Isopropyl alcohol and Bandaids on the nose, like a hospital. Very high toned, with some almond aromas as well. Definitely old world based on the weird oily and funky palate. Not much acidity, and a slight bit of gasoline. I'm thinking this was a flawed bottle based on the really disturbing nose. (2395 views) | | Tasted by tooch on 12/18/2014: Blind Dinner at Browntrout (Browntrout - Chicago, IL): Served blind. I guessed Muscadet, but wasn't quite sure on the age. Most people thought this was a bit corked, but I thought it was just aged Muscadet. Dunno. Anyways, the nose had tons of stony and airy tones of florals and tangerine. The palate was crisp and lively, I think some got some corky notes here, but again, I didn't see that as much. Wasn't as moving as the bottle I had back in September, but I'm always a fan of aged Muscadet. (2663 views) | | Tasted by tooch on 9/20/2014 & rated 90 points: For SFJoe (Josefa & Mark's House - Chicago, IL): The first time I had this I liked it a bit more. This bottle wasn't as fresh and zippy but still had beautiful floral and rocky tones to it. (2929 views) | | Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 7/31/2014 & rated 93 points: Light gold color. Nose of dried honey, white flowers, candied lemon and grapefruit. Intense on the palate, with live-wire acid on a light-bodied frame. Showing nice salinity and chalk on top of the apricot and lime. Lots of wet stones, mountain stream, seashell, oyster brine and a bit of sliced shallot and spice elements. Some slight nutty notes. Long, complex, still plenty of staying power. Elegant and refined. So much more complex and intriguing than the other bottle I had in 2013. Please decant. After four hours in the decanter, this was so much more precise and exotic. It just keeps getting better and better. Etheral nose of minerals, lime and sea salt. Crisp, yet fat and creamy on the palate with dazzling purity and long finish. Great stuff. | NOTE: Scores and reviews are the property of View From the Cellar and Winedoctor and Rockss and Fruit. (manage subscription channels) |
| Melon de BourgogneMelon de Bourgogne or Melon is a variety of white grape grown primarily in the Loire Valley region of France. It is also grown in North America. It is best known through its use in the white wine Muscadet.
In the U.S., Federal law prevents "Muscadet" from being used for American-produced wine; only the full name of the grape, or the shortened "Melon" can be used.
