Wine dinner at my new apartment in Brooklyn with a crew from Wine Library, along with some new friends. There was no theme given to the wines, but everyone seemed to be on the same page - Burgundy, Burgundy, Burgundy! Add a sprinkling of Champagne, Piedmont, Chateauneuf, and good conversation, and you're in for a good night. Outside of a premoxed Dauvissat, there wasn't a single clunker in the lineup.
some wines to warm up with...
Served alongside my beef & pork bolognese over paparadelle. Not bad if I do say so myself!
My biggest takeaway? Ponsot! I have little experience with the wines, especially anything with age... I'm now on the hunt, despite reports of inconsistencies between vineyards and vintages. Oh, and let Giacosa sleep. No news here, really.
NV Doyard Champagne Premier Cru Vendémiaire Blanc de Blancs Brut
France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
A great way to start the night. Nose of honeyed yeast, toasted apple and pear lead to a rich, round palate with good depth of fruit. While rich and mouth coating, it maintains good focus and persistance of acid. Very good value and a cool discovery.

2007 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Citrus and white flower driven nose, with bright and lively lemon-lime and apple flavors on the palate. Bright and balanced but a hair one dimensional.

2008 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Open a couple days before tasting. Nose of vanilla, custard, and grilled lemon. Nice toasty citrus and orchard fruits up front, though the mid palate through finish seems to fall off. Maybe not a fair assessment given the time open.

1997 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Premox strikes another 97 Dauvy but not to the point of making it undrinkable. Marzipan, brown sugar and honey nose. Apple and grilled lemon on the palate, though the fruit dies on the way out. Fell apart the more it sat.

1999 Radikon Oslavje
Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
Orange, almost tannish brown in color. Complex nose of toasted almond and orange peel. Good weight and holding up well for a wine its age, with tannin! (which is always fun in this style). A little tinge of alcohol on the finish, but I should note that I was the only one bothered by it in the group.

2009 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Benefitted from a couple of days open. Complex and beautiful smelling, with a creme brulee, honey and toasted apple. The palate is round and rich with the oak still working to integrate, but underneath that oak is great structure. Ripe in style, as the 09s are, but not overly so. Very good even at this stage.
