Burgundy & More in Williamsburg

Introduction

Wine dinner at my new apartment in Brooklyn with a crew from Wine Library, along with some new friends. There was no theme given to the wines, but everyone seemed to be on the same page - Burgundy, Burgundy, Burgundy! Add a sprinkling of Champagne, Piedmont, Chateauneuf, and good conversation, and you're in for a good night. Outside of a premoxed Dauvissat, there wasn't a single clunker in the lineup.

Flight 1 - Before dinner (6 notes)

some wines to warm up with...

White - Sparkling
N.V. Doyard Champagne Premier Cru Vendémiaire Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
A great way to start the night. Nose of honeyed yeast, toasted apple and pear lead to a rich, round palate with good depth of fruit. While rich and mouth coating, it maintains good focus and persistance of acid. Very good value and a cool discovery.
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Citrus and white flower driven nose, with bright and lively lemon-lime and apple flavors on the palate. Bright and balanced but a hair one dimensional.
White
2008 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Open a couple days before tasting. Nose of vanilla, custard, and grilled lemon. Nice toasty citrus and orchard fruits up front, though the mid palate through finish seems to fall off. Maybe not a fair assessment given the time open.
White
1997 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Premox strikes another 97 Dauvy but not to the point of making it undrinkable. Marzipan, brown sugar and honey nose. Apple and grilled lemon on the palate, though the fruit dies on the way out. Fell apart the more it sat.
Orange
1999 Radikon Oslavje Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
Orange, almost tannish brown in color. Complex nose of toasted almond and orange peel. Good weight and holding up well for a wine its age, with tannin! (which is always fun in this style). A little tinge of alcohol on the finish, but I should note that I was the only one bothered by it in the group.
White
2009 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Benefitted from a couple of days open. Complex and beautiful smelling, with a creme brulee, honey and toasted apple. The palate is round and rich with the oak still working to integrate, but underneath that oak is great structure. Ripe in style, as the 09s are, but not overly so. Very good even at this stage.

Flight 2 - With dinner (6 notes)

Served alongside my beef & pork bolognese over paparadelle. Not bad if I do say so myself!

Red
2004 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Very herbal on the nose. Greenies even hit the greatest of producers in 04! With time in the decanter, began showing some interesting pickled red radish and earth, with red fruits, forest floor and bell pepper on the palate. Good though undeniably "2004", and I doubt it will develop any further.
Red
1998 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Light ruby in color, with just a touch of bricking. Nose brings a damp top soil, dried cherry and leather profile. This wine is singing - tart red fruit profile of cranberry, pomegranate and sour cherry, melded with a bacon fat and black tea component on its way out. Could go longer but why wait? This wine is showing great tertiary character with a solid core of fruit. Stunning wine.
Red
2001 Domaine Ponsot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Elegance in a glass. Beautiful perfumed nose of lilacs and red and black cherry fruit. Baby's bottom silkiness - red fruits and minerality for days, which are light on its feet all the way through. Classic Chambolle character and drinking very nicely right now! One of the best of the night, holding its own in tough competition
Red
2001 Forey Père et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Dried cherry and mineral notes on the nose, with a palate that leaned towards black fruit and a lingering black tea on the way out. Strong, chewy tannin structure that suggests it could still develop. Good though not great.
Red
2001 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Decanted 2+ hours. Deeply colored nebbiolo, with smoke, licorice and black cherry coming through. Sweet, dense black fruits up front are very ripe - surprisingly so. Grippy, mouth drying tannins that dominate the mid palate through finish scolded us for opening so young. Charcoal and black tea flavors on the super long finish are nice, but this still needs plenty of time. Revisit in 2015.
Red
1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Hour decant. Black cherry, licorice and herbs de provence are bright and beautiful, leading to a juicy palate of black cherry and plum. There's a savory, meaty, espresso character on the tail end that keeps things interesting. Showing some nice, developed character but more youthful than I'd expected. Nice way to end the evening!

Closing

My biggest takeaway? Ponsot! I have little experience with the wines, especially anything with age... I'm now on the hunt, despite reports of inconsistencies between vineyards and vintages. Oh, and let Giacosa sleep. No news here, really.
