Introduction

The theme was WWTDS paired with some outstanding and some very good dishes from Sea Change at the Guthrie. Six gathered to partake: Steve, Lonny, David, Craig, Candace, and myself.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was even better than the last time I had it, nose and palate are consistent; nice earth, nutty, delicate, brioche with citrus and tree fruit, fine minerality. Medium plus finish.

France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie

Pale gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. The nose is brisk, sea air, shell minerality, fresh cut honeydew melon, citrus. The palate is saline infused, mineral rich, crisp with lime and melon notes, medium finish. Perfect as expected with the oysters.

  • 2002 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Fantastic, every bit as good as the last time I had it. Amazing on the nose with fresh yeast, pear, very floral, dried herbs, earth, toasted almond, tangerine. The palate has both power and finesse, great intensity, floral, apple, pear, melon, very elegant and crisp clean minerality, almond, and so fresh; very, very long finish - wow. What a honey.

  • 2005 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Clos du Bourg 91 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Slow to evolve in glass, initially rather reserved and non-descript (Craig mentioned a spoiled milk note), but it blossoms after 45 minutes to reveal a tropical character, nectarine, peach, passion fruit, and distinct minerality. The palate has marked viscosity, lemon oil, citrus zest, earthy, apricot, passion fruit, medium bodied, slate, medium finish. This is a wine that requires some time to emerge to full appreciate.

  • 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light gold color. PNP, Drank 1+ glass over 90 minutes. This was a pristine bottle, a wow wine with a great nose and palate. I was struck by the intensity here. The nose was tropical, very fresh fruits, mango, orange, orange blossoms, quite floral, butterscotch, a touch of anise, mineral. The palate was lively and expressive, gorgeous minerality, precise, tropical, citrus, anise. Long finish. I loved this bottle! 94+ to 95pts.

  • 2009 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Very pale gold color. This was another striking wine, brightly floral, peach, minerals, orange, mild oak. The palate is lively, balanced, very bright, peach, orange zest, clean brisk minerals, citrus, focused and long on the finish. A pleasure to drink.

  • 2007 Kistler Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Light-medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This bottle was not as good as one from 2 years ago. The nose is smoky, oak, stinky earth, toasted, citrus. The palate is big, volumptous, orange, citrus, nutty, toasted oak, sharp oak finish, medium finish. Suffered by comparison tonight and coming at the end; not what I typically expect from Kistler. 89-90pts.
