Introduction

Wines drank before our Champagne tasting.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2000 Trimbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre 94 Points

    France, Alsace

Wonderful nose grapefruit, apricots and tropical fruit; touch of honey. Spectacular mouthfeel, glycerine-like and creamy feeling. Palate had honey and tropical fruit flavors, followed by grapefruit and a hint of spice along a racy, acid-driven backbone at the end. Great acid zing and lovely, long finish. Loved this wine.

  • 1964 Château Croizet-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

50th birthday birth year wine present from Jason.

First pour was wet wool right out the gate, but blew off over time. Nose had very little remaining. Surprised by the palate, decent taste of cherry and plenty of acid remaining. As to be expected, not particularly complex or long, but a nice glass of mature wine that has held up quite good. Thanks Jason!

  • 1997 Silvio Grasso Barolo Bricco Luciani 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose had strong classic Barolo notes. Potent nose of tar, rose petals, hint of balsamic. Palate was a bit disjointed with slight discordant note on finish. Still, always came together by last sip in the glass. Enough tannins to go further so recommend waiting another 5 years minimum to see if the palate meshes.

  • 1990 Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano 98 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vin Santo di Montepulciano

Wow, what an experience. Nose is extremely elegant, yet complex and impressive; it had burnt sugar, coffee, figs, roasted pecans, Turkish Delight, lavender honey-it just goes on and on. I could just sit and sniff this for hours. The palate has a mouthfeel that is thick and viscous like olive oil, followed by a kaleidoscopic array of nuts, dried fruit, lots of fig and toffee, with a reappearance of coffee and something wild on the finish. A total "wow" wine, one of the best I ever had. Thanks Ron!

  • 2002 Château Doisy-Daëne 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Decent. Nose of pineapple and apricot. Palate had the same with a hint of burnt oranges at the end. Balanced, but very much on the lighter side. Doesn't come across as a dessert wine.

  • 1993 Giovanni Manzone Barolo Riserva Le Gramolere 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Shy nose of classic Barolo tar and rose petal perfume. Palate was balanced, fairly seamless combination of red fruits, cedar, floral, earthy and tarry notes. Refined and resolved, but a bit understated. Still, no complaints

Very impressed with the Vin Santo. A one-of-a-kind experience.
