Introduction

This was fun little gathering of 11 featuring a nice lecture on winter birds and waterfowl followed by a lengthy dissertation on, well, ok all we really did after was drink the wine. But we pretended to be somewhat philosophical anyway.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • NV Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvée No. 736 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Pale gold color. 2oz pour over 30 minutes. The nose has light toast, yeast, apple, light minerality. The palate is nicely toasted, yeast, baked bread, fresh and crisp, light-medium body, pear, stone fruit. This was very refreshing with good depth and definition.

  • NV Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Grand Rosé 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Medium salmon color. 2oz pour over 30 minutes. This was another very fine offering with an ultra fine bead, lots of clean minerals, strawberry, light, and creamy. 91+pts. Just a bit more subtle on the palate but very clean on the finish.

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light gold color. 2oz pour over 20 minutes. Lots of fusil, apple, some tropical fruit, citrus, sweet, seems a bit flabby tonight. Just not as crisp and bright in the past. Might have been a bit too warm and that may have hurt it a touch.

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

  • 2012 Rombauer Vineyards Zinfandel Napa Valley 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark red color. 3oz pour over 45 minutes. Hadn't had a Rombauer Zin for some time and my last experiences were not memorable. This was a pretty nice showing. Not too heavy or jammy. there was some pretty red berry fruit, framboise, chocolate, boysenberry, ripe, liqueur like palate, balanced.

  • 2010 Robert Biale Zinfandel Black Chicken 88 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District

Very dark red color. Decanted for an 30 minutes, 2oz pour over an hour. I wasn't crazy about this bottle. I've had other vintages that were quite nice. This was somewhat heavy handed, sharp, green, peppery, big, full bodied, blackberry, quite a bit of alcohol showing. Maybe this will settle down a bit with some time, but I'd think that should be the case already.

  • 2005 Meek Family Estate Inherit 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

Very dark red color. PNP, 1 glass over an hour. Its been two years sine last having this, and I wondered how it would be holding up. Well the answer was quite well. Nice ripe black fruits on the nose, with blackberry, black plum, cassis, some red fruit, fresh. The palate has boysenberry, kirsch, layered, just a bit sour, blackberry liqueur, nice pepper, and a medium plus finish. Still can go a couple years based on this bottle. 91+pts.

  • 2005 Star Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. The nose has plenty of blackberry and cassis. The palate has glycerin, blackberry liqueur, medium plus body, blueberry, sweet fruit, good length, wood and some heat. Much better than the last bottle and more typical in general. I'd probably polish these off with the next couple years.

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. Complex nose, savory, roasted meats, smoke, lack fruits. The palate is dry, tar, scorched earth, smoke, blackberry, cassis, teriyaki marinated flank steak, medium plus finish. Just an occasional bit of warmth. Very good, again. 92+pts.

  • 2003 Château Rieussec 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nectarines, pineapple, honey, orange, citrus zest, and spice on both the nose and palate. The palate is sweet and a bit flabby. Not a lot of evolution over the last 2+ years. 91+ to 92pts.

Closing

Lots of good wines, but I'd say the Champagnes and the '03 Sequel were the highlights for me.
