Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2006 Reignac

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

Very dark core, some chocolate, deep red crimson rim; tar, blackberry, asphalt, some green pepper, leather, tobacco, dark cherry, dried fruit; dark fruit, very tarry, tannic, ash, lower acid, a bit harsh; was on Montepulciano d'Abruzzo; not sure if this bottle saw heat but I was not a fan.

  • 2011 Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Ruby garnet, clarity; sweet, juicy, new, Italian, tart, candied strawberry and raspberry, Jolly Rancher-esque, some herbs; tart, sour, dark cherry, some raspberry, a touch of grip, still some nice acid; we were all on Dolcetto; this really needed air which knocked off some of the candy and brought out a more serious quality to the wine; good though not as good as the previous bottle.

  • 2008 Cascina Chicco Langhe Nebbiolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

See through brick red core with orange rim; ripe, plum, almost raisin, brown sugar, fennel, orange oil, leather; good drive on the palate, some age is visible, grip though not strong, meaty, firm, ripe fruit, anise, warm reddish brown fruit; not great, drink soon.

  • 2004 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines Flawed

    Portugal, Douro

Slightly corked. Still made a note:
Some clarity, dark core with crimson rim; touch of cork, leather, funk, lots of wet earth and vegetal notes; strong tannin, ashy, tobacco, lots of herbs, strong currant, nice texture, expansive.

  • 2007 Tenuta San Leonardo San Leonardo

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Dark crimson core, clarity, dull crimson rim; white pepper, new oak strong, sweet, bell pepper, nice green on the back, strong mineral; red cherry, sour, firm, juicy, spicy, focused red fruit, ageworthy; expansive on the nose but nice drive on the palate; was in '09 Bordeaux this time, some day I may call this wine correctly.

  • 2010 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Ateo

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Sant' Antimo

Bright dark crimson, clarity; strong mineral, juicy, young fruit, seemingly a bit hot, currant, some reductive notes; nice texture on entry, spicy red fruit, a touch of green, tobacco, ashy, currant, higher acid, very firm and grippy finish; never softened with air so I'd suggest cellaring longer if you can wait.

  • 2010 Tenuta degli Dei Cavalli Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Darker core with fresher garnet rim; sweet, tart, dark fruit, fresh, violets, juicy, blackberry, intense, herbs, good focus, higher alcohol; good acid and tannin structure, raspberry, blackberry, dark cherry and pits, a bit of vanilla and glycerin on the exhale suggest some modern qualities, tar, good restraint, fresh fruit almost compote, black currant, high toned liqueur filled finish; interesting wine, good wine for New World drinkers, give it a few more years; 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot, 15% Cabernet Franc.

  • 2010 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Chorey-les-Beaune

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune

See through bright red, pale rim; very reductive on the nose, strawberry Jolly Ranchers burning on the stove, watermelon, a little confected, cotton candy, nice acid and freshness, a bit funky but there is some good tension underneath, a certain faked quality to the wine a bit makes me wonder how it will age; contemplated Tollot Beaut ClB.

  • 2011 M. Chapoutier Shiraz Domaine Tournon Shays Flat Vineyard

    Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Pyrenees

Crimson core, some clarity, paler rim; white pepper, black pepper, good depth, reeks of Northern Rhone, granite; a bit more sour mineral on the palate, fuller body and texture than the regular Tournon; everyone was debating whether this was St. Joseph or Crozes.

Closing

Interesting night. Some ringers were thrown in there for sure.

San Leonardo was clearly the best but clearly outside of the price point.
