The theme of the tasting was wines made by Michel Rolland - or rather wines where Rolland consults.

• 2004 Remhoogte Estate Wine 86 Points

  South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch

  Clear dark red color. Aromas of mocha, blackcurrant and a green note, like tomato plant - for me associated with the pinotage grape. On the palate it starts a bit bitter, with cherries, but gain intensity over the midpalate, before ending with dark chocolate and soft tannins. There is a through bitterness that hurts the overall impression.

• 2004 Lapostolle Merlot Cuvée Alexandre Apalta Vineyard 82 Points

  Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

  Clear dark red color. The nose gives associations to smelling tomato plants and green vegetables, plus some hints of tobaco. Unfortunately the taste is also dominated by the green tomatos. Hollow end, hard and bitter. Like a cold cup of coffee.

• 2004 Clos de los Siete 88 Points

  Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco

  Clear dark red color. Fresh nose with strawberry in milk and sugar and some tobaco and coffee. Very fleshy mouthfell with lots of fruit, and gaining some tobaco and dark chocolate on the midpalate. Medium length ending with a good deal of tannins. Drinking nicely right now, although it might open up a bit more with some age.

• 2000 San Pedro de Yacochuya Yacochuya 88 Points

  Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Cafayate

  Dark red to black color. Very distinct nose with dark berries, ash, pepper and a some alcohol. The taste has a good deal of blackcurrant that does not change much over the midpalate. Some intense bitterness and paint or nail polish does show up, yet the overall picture is a rustic wine. On the end it has powerfull tannins and ends very dry, leaving a taste of mold in the mouth. Weird and interesting wine - but altough I find lots of complexity and concentration it does not rate highly on my pleasure scale.

• 2004 Château Lascombes 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Clear red/black color. Huge nose with roasted coffee, mocha, vanila and blackcurrant. I used a lot of time just sniffing this - although it is primarily the oak that dominates right now, the aromas are very good. On the palate the wine is completely different, earthy and holding back, giving some blackcurrant. Good structure and the fruit grows on the palate. Good lenght with some coffee and dark chocolate towards the end. Very modern style Bordeaux, unfortunately the nose promises more than the taste can deliver.
