Burgundy best of village blind

Introduction

Theme was for best village wines over a relaxed dinner and tasting menue at La Trompette. Overall the quality was high and probably the whites did better. That being said the reds were also from less favoured vintages overall (including 03 and 04).

Flight 1 - Aperitif (non blind) (1 Note)

  • 2012 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

I like Montee Tonerre and it is probably my favorite 1er cru from Raveneau. This was another example of a great Chablis. Very good concentration, lovely melt in the mouth. This stood up well to all the other lauded white Burg producers to follow that night (3x Coche Meursault, 2x Vogue Bourgogne blanc and 1x Ente Meursault). So in that context big thumbs up.

Flight 2 - White flight #1 (2 Notes)

  • 2013 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc Flawed

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Argh... first of the blind wines that evening. And sadly/embarrassingly the bottle that I brought. I meant well as I heard good things about this wine, and thought that so close to being declared Musigny blanc this might be the real deal. We all thought it had aromas of cider, it was simple and sour. Served next to the 08 version blind totally different / inferior. A bad bottle we all thought. Got two more of these and I do very much hope those show better. They simply must. PS Corney & Barrow agreed to refund this which is much appreciated!

  • 2008 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Side by side a faulty 2013 version of this wine the 2008 was a very nice wine. Seemed on the right maturity level. Mild reduction, vanilla and decent depth.

Flight 3 - White flight #2 (3 Notes)

  • 2013 Coche-Dury Meursault 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Served blind, reduction, lemon oil, good concentration, long and pure. Thought Meursault. Not as good as the 2012 next to it. But in isolation a lovely wine (I probably rated this higher than the group).

  • 2012 Coche-Dury Meursault 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

More reduction (than the 2013 before it), matchstick. The real deal, long and zesty, mineral and doesn't quit. Guessed this as Coche 12 as knew it was in the line-up. Yes this is good, especially for a village and was (clearly) my WOTN.

  • 1997 Coche-Dury Meursault 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

More nutty and mature compared to the 12 & 13. This didn't get so much love with the group but I found it wonderful. Guessed Meursault blind (maybe Comte Lafon Clos Barre 2002?). Nicely mature and would be pulling corks.

Flight 4 - Red flight #1 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Domaine Bizot Vosne-Romanée 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Lovely wine and initially I thought Vosne from a great/glossy producer but what threw me off was who this went quite thin with the truffle linguine weirdly. Probably would have thought this more mature than 2012. Some nice sweetness to the fruit and quite dark in appearance.

  • 2004 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Crunchy and noticeable mature, in a good spot and a very positive surprise for the vintage as it had decent fruit and sweetness to it. Of course no blockbuster.

Flight 5 - Red flight #2 (3 Notes)

Flight 6 - Nightcap (1 Note)

  • 2014 Arnaud Ente Meursault 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

This came out late in the evening after the reds and dessert as night cap. A treat to have this rare Ente Meursault, a bit more steely and linear compared to various Coche Meursault's earlier in the evening (probably stylistically I prefer Coche). Very precise and upside from here with further ageing.

Closing

I am guilty of being a bit of 1er and Grand Cru whore so good to get a read on those top village wines. Given the price tag of Burgundy top producers though those aren't real bargains either and with the exception of possibly Coche 12 there wasn't the wine that immediately stood out to be delivering near 1er (leave alone GC) quality. The wines were overall though lovely balanced and precise.
