Tasting Training for WSET Level 4, Units D4 + D5 - Session 9

Introduction

As opposed to my usual tasting notes, I have written these tasting notes in accordance with the "WSET Level 4 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine".

The notes may hence seem technical for readers not applying the same tasting grid. Also, the WSET system has a different approach to the ageability of wines than I personally do. Consequently, while I typically age most of my wines, in the WSET system most wines are not expected to "improve" in bottle and even a wine that will hold or keep but not necessarily gain in complexity is hence considered "not suitable for further aging in bottle". Also, the WSET quality classifications of poor, acceptable, good, very good, and outstanding do not fully correspond to the 100-point scale used on CT. Please bear this in mind when reading these notes.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2019 Château de Jau Muscat de Rivesaltes Chez Jau 86 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Muscat de Rivesaltes

    The wine has a pale lemon colour. The nose has pronounced intensity and shows primary characteristics of floral notes (blossom), green fruit (grape, pear) and stone fruit (peach).

    On the palate the wine is medium-sweet, with medium acidity, medium alcohol, and a medium body. The flavour intensity is pronounced, flavours mirror the nose and include primary characteristics of floral notes (blossom), green fruit (grape, pear) and stone fruit (peach). The wine has a soapy texture, the finish has medium length, with a sugary aftertaste. The overall impression is a simple.

    This is a good quality wine since it has very good intensity, shows medium complex primary characteristics, the alcohol is well-integrated, and the wine has medium length. To be considered being of very good quality the wine would need greater length and in particular greater complexity.

    This wine is defined by its fresh fruit and ready to drink, and not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

  • 2007 Château de Jau Rivesaltes Ambré Chez Jau 87 Points

    The wine has a medium amber colour. The nose has medium intensity and shows mostly tertiary characteristic of dried fruit (dried apricot), roasted almond, walnut, caramel and coffee.

    On the palate the wine is sweet, with medium acidity, medium alcohol, and a medium body. The flavour intensity is medium(+), flavours mirror the nose and include mostly tertiary characteristic of dried fruit (dried apricot, white raisins), roasted almond, walnut, caramel and coffee. The wine has a creamy texture, the finish has medium length, with a sugary aftertaste. The overall impression is a little simple.

    This is a good quality wine since it has good intensity, shows medium complex tertiary characteristics, the alcohol is well-integrated, and the wine has medium length. To be considered being of very good quality the wine would need greater length and in particular greater complexity.

    The wine has been aged oxidatively, and is perceived as simple, and is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

  • 2010 Château de Jau Rivesaltes Grenat Chez Jau 86 Points

    The wine has a medium tawny colour. The nose has medium(+) intensity and shows some primary characteristics of red fruit (cranberry) and black fruit (plum), but mostly tertiary characteristic of dried fruit (dried red cherry, prune, fig) and walnut.

    On the palate the wine is sweet, with medium acidity, medium tannin, medium alcohol, and a medium body. The flavour intensity is medium(+), flavours are mostly tertiary and include dried fruit (dried red cherry, prune, fig), coffee, chocolate and walnut. The finish has medium length, with a sugary aftertaste. The overall impression is simple and developed.

    This is a good quality wine since it has good intensity, shows multiple tertiary characteristics (in particular on the palate), the alcohol is well-integrated, and the wine has medium length. To be considered being of very good quality the wine would need greater length and in particular greater complexity.

    The wine is perceived as simple and developed, and has already passed its prime drinking window, and is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

    NB: Synthetic cork. Drink up.

    The wine has a medium ruby colour. The nose has medium(+) intensity and shows primary characteristics of red fruit (strawberry, raspberry, red cherry,) and black fruit (blackberry, plum).

    On the palate the wine is sweet, with medium acidity, medium tannin that is perceived as dry but fine, medium alcohol, and a medium body. The flavour intensity is medium(+), flavours mirror the nose and include primary characteristics of red fruit (strawberry, raspberry, red cherry,) and black fruit (blackberry, plum). The finish has medium(+) length.

    This is a very good quality wine since it has good intensity, shows clean and precise primary fruit characteristics, the alcohol is well-integrated, and the wine has good length. To be considered being of outstanding quality the wine would need greater length and even greater complexity.

    This wine is defined by its primary fruit and is ready to drink, and while it will keep for a number of years thanks to its high alcohol and high sugar it will not improve with further time and is to be considered not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

    NB: Much fresher than the Chez Jau Rivesaltes Grenat 2010.

  • NV Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Fine Ruby 86 Points

    The wine has a deep ruby colour. The nose has medium intensity and shows primary characteristics of red fruit (ripe cherry) and black fruit (ripe blackberry, ripe dark cherry) and spice (black pepper, liquorice) as well as a black tea leaf aspect.

    On the palate the wine is medium-sweet, with medium acidity, medium(+) tannin that is perceived as coarse, high alcohol, and a medium(+) body. The flavour intensity is medium(+), flavours mirror the aromas on the nose and include primary characteristics of red fruit (ripe cherry), black fruit (ripe blackberry, black currant, ripe dark cherry) and spice (black pepper, liquorice) as well as secondary characteristics like chocolate. The alcohol is warming, the finish has medium(+) length.

    This is a good quality wine since it has good intensity, medium complexity, and very good length. To be considered being of very good quality the wine would need better quality tannin, better integration of the alcohol, and greater complexity and length.

    The wine is defined by its fruit and does not have the structure and fruit concentration to age well, and is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

  • NV Gonzalez-Byass Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Solera 1847 Cream 88 Points

    On the palate the wine is sweet, with medium(-) acidity, medium alcohol, and a medium body. The flavours are of medium intensity and mirror the aromas on the nose, i.e. include tertiary characteristics of walnut, toffee, caramel and coffee. The texture is creamy, the alcohol is lightly warming, the finish has medium(+) length.

    This is a good quality wine since it has good intensity, medium complexity, and medium length. To be considered being of very good quality the wine would need better integration of the alcohol and greater complexity and length.

    The wine was aged oxidatively; it will keep for a few years on its current level, but will not improve, and is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

    The wine has a medium amber colour. The nose has medium(+) intensity and shows primary characteristic of citrus fruit (ripe lemon, orange) and tertiary characteristics of walnut, toffee and coffee.

    On the palate the wine is lusciously sweet, with medium acidity, medium alcohol, and a medium(+) body. The flavours mirror the nose and include primary characteristic of citrus fruit (ripe lemon, orange) and tertiary characteristics of walnut, toffee, coffee and honey as well as a black tea leaf component. The texture is thick and oily. The finish is long.

    This is an outstanding quality wine since it has good complexity of primary and tertiary characteristic, a smooth texture, well-integrated alcohol and very good length.

    The wine was aged in oxidative conditions; it will keep for a number of years thanks to its oxidative aging, high alcohol, and high sugar, but will not improve, and is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

    The wine has a deep brown colour. The nose has medium(+) intensity and shows tertiary characteristics of raisins, walnut, wood polish, molasses, liquorice and wild honey.

    On the palate the wine is lusciously sweet, with medium acidity, medium alcohol, and a medium(+) body. The flavours mirror the nose and include tertiary characteristics of raisins, walnut, molasses, liquorice and wild honey. The wine’s texture is smooth, thick and creamy, the finish is very long.

    This is an outstanding quality wine since it has good complexity, great concentration, a smooth texture, and great length.

    The wine was aged in oxidative conditions; it will keep for a number of years thanks to its oxidative aging, alcohol, and high sugar, but it will not improve, and is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.
