    slightly jammy black currant, cedar, touch of Ribena, mint, herbaceous underpin and sweet spice. Juicy, tight, black fruit is concentrated but less jammy, plenty of tight chalky tannins. Time.

  • 2017 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot

    Plums over blackcurrant, earth, slight mint. Juicy, tangy, slight red currant joins the black hued fruits, Talc textured tannins. Nice.

    Smells slightly cabernet dominant, blackcurrant, plums, sweet spices, cedar. Juicy, tangy, savoury, plums over blackcurrant, softly textured tannins, slight alcohol warmth intrudes moderately on the finish. Okay.

    Slightly minty, savoury, blackberry over plums, slight sweet spice and a smidge of black pepper. Juicy acidity proves slightly sharp, slightly anonymous black fruits, coarse tannins, alcohol warmth, meh.

  • 2020 Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Blackcurrant and eucalyptus, earth over sweet spice and cedar. Palate is a concentrated version of the nose, tight but balanced tannins, time required but balanced, lovely.

  • 2020 Brand's Laira Cabernet Sauvignon 1968 Vines

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Black over red currant, slightly jammy underpin, cedar, sweet spice. Juicy, black and red currant less jammy on the palate, slightly coarse and chalky tannins are drying, tight, slight alcohol warmth on the finish.

    Cream, polished oak, sweet spice, concentrated blackcurrant, slight eucalyptus. Juicy, quite Ribena, concentrated black fruit, cream, oak, sweet spice, floury textured tannins. All persists long with non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Hmm.

    concentrated, slightly baked black currant, sweet spice, cedar, plenty of alcohol, concentrated black fruit on the palate as well, soft tannins are floury textured. Long but this is a bit too overdone for me.

    Very slight pencil shavings, blackcurrant, very slight sweet spice, earth, cedar. Very concentrated fruit on the palate, slightly hard and chalky green tannins. Palate disappointing after the nose. Meh.

    Savoury blackcurrant, very slight plums, pencil shavings, cedar, pyrazine, slight sweet spice. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, Floury tannins are drying fruit persists, non-intrusive alcohol warmth, cedar, smidge of cream. Very good.

    Coffee, Ribena, Baked earth and baking spice with a slightly savoury underpin. Concentrated black fruit, tight chalky tannins, showing as very young but, hmm, not quite right for me.

  • 2017 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon The Sydney Reserve

    concentrated, jammy, slightly anonymous black hued fruit, cedar, pyrazine...In the mouth the tight oaky tannins are very much to the fore with some surprisingly slight sour fruit, mid palate scoop, a slightly belchy quality and plenty of alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.

  • 2019 Majella Cabernet Sauvignon

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Very slightly sour smelling blackcurrant, smidge of eucalyptus, cedar and sweet spices in support on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, that sour note to the fruit is on the palate as well but doesn't detract, very slightly chalky tannins support the fruit. Simple, young, nice.

  • 2016 Majella The Malleea

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Medium minus intensity aromas of concentrated black hued fruits (especially currants), cedar, slight herbaceous underpin, smidge of sweet spices. Palate proves slightly sour with a mid scoop, drying tannins are softly textured, Non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

  • 2015 Majella Cabernet Sauvignon GPL68

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Eucalyptus, blackcurrant, cedar, a sense of concentration to the fruit without being overbearing on the nose. And so it proves on the palate, fresh blackcurrant is very fruit pure with a little concentration, tannins drying, slightly cedary but very much in support, Non-intrusive alcohol warmth, all travel very long. Excellent on this tasting.

    Medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, very slight eucalyptus, slightly perfumed, cedar, sweet spice. Juicy, initially a little thin, tight, chalky tannins, slight alcohol warmth, black fruit but a little anonymous for me.

  • 2018 Parker Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Terra Rossa

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Blackcurrant, herbaceous notes, sweet spice and cedar, slight plum. Juicy, fleshy, black fruit, persistent tannins are talc textured, spice on the finish. Nice to very nice but I'm a bit hmm for some reason.

  • 2019 Redman Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

    A strange taint note initially which dissipates with agitation to show perfumed notes, black fruit, sweet spice, very slight herbaceous underpin. Juicy, merlot more obvious on the palate lending plums and a bit of mid palate breadth, slight blackcurrant, soft tannins are drying. Okay.

  • 2019 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label

    Blackcurrant, slight eucalyptus, a tiny sweaty note, cedar. Juicy, chewy, savoury, dense tannins seem to dominate. Not as good as when I last tasted this - quite closed and lacking generosity.

  • 2016 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Single Vineyard O'Deas

    Red and black fruits, slightly herbaceous, savoury, cedar, sweet spice. In the mouth it's juicy, savoury, fleshy, red and black fruit, mid palate breadth, drying, persistent, talc textured tannins creep up. Non-intrusive alcohol warmth helps carry the finish. Good.

  • 2016 Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon The Menzies

    On the nose concentrated black currant fruit, cedar, smidge of eucalyptus, sweet spice. In the mouth it's juicy, slightly baked black fruit, dense tannins are tight but quite floury textured, there is a bit of alcohol warmth on the finish as well. Showing quite primary but balanced in a large way. Hmm.

    Super pretty, jubey, primary nose, very slight volatility...Very interesting nose...Fruit lozenge on the palate with fruit tea, biscuits, tannins are chalky and separate from the fruit. Oddly compelling but also weird.

    Cream, butter, earth, muted black fruit. Juicy, fleshy initially, tight chewy tannins, sour black fruits, tangy...soooooooo young...again I struggle to see what I consider Cab Franc typicity. But then those experiences are based on mostly Loire wines which probably explains it completely. I should get down to Coonawarra around harvest and see if I can try some fresh fruit...

    Concentrated version of the standard Jack Estate Cabernet with a bit more oak and cedar on the nose. This carries to the palate which also proves quite unevolved after 8 years...Perhaps a long decant would help...

    Meaty, savoury, plummy, served very cold. Thickly dense on the palate, bone dry, plummy fruit, aggressive mousse, tannins are talc textured, quite unpleasant. Nah.

And the answer is...a general move away from over-extraction and too much new oak. A few nice wines here. Interesting tasting.
