Introduction
Many thanks to David Bowler and Mikhail for the invite to this lollapalooza of german wines in the US, the Rudi Wiest portfolio.
As always with these sorts of tastings, notes and scores should be taken with large grains of salt. The pours were miniscule. There was little chance for rinsing between wines. All the whites were on ice, which muted and masked aromas and flavors. We had to go back and forth between full-bodied, high RS wines and delicate dry whites at virtually every table.
The JJ Prüms were still all pretty heavily sulfured, so I didn't pay much attention to the noses of those wines. They need time.
2005 Dr. Heger Blauer Spätburgunder Trocken 85 Points
Germany, Baden
Light ruby color. Candied cherries and a touch of funk on the nose, but falls a bit flat on the palate.

2006 Friedrich Becker Pinot Noir 86 Points

Light to medium ruby. Pretty, focused red berry and spice nose. Medium bodied but a bit austere on the palate.

2007 Weingut Schnaitmann Spätburgunder Samtrot ** Trocken 88 Points

Light to medium ruby color. Intense wild red berries, herbs and menthol on the nose. Good body and intensity on the palate but perhaps a touch overoaked. If that integrates it could get better.

Light to medium ruby color. Nose of oak, mountain herbs and wild red berries. On the palate it is a bit astringent, with racy acidity that sticks out a bit.

Light lemon color. It's a bit off on the nose, the smell is sulfury and so likely would blow off with time. White fruit on the palate but a bit flat on the middle to finish.

Light lemon color. Smoky, minerally nose. Full bodied on the palate with tingly acidity on the middle. Not enough acidity on the finish right now, however, which detracts a bit. Flavors of white fruit.

Light lemon color. Somewhat reticent on the nose today, with faint elements of tropical fruit. On the palate it is medium dry with loads of ripe apple and red cherries.

Light lemon color. Honey with a touch of caraway seed and some faint botrytized notes. On the palate it is full bodied and a little less acid than the 07 of the same wine. Notes of strawberry jam and mango are quite pretty though.

Light lemon color. (This was not one of the listed offerings; I know it was an 07 Auslese from Schloßböckelheim; I believe it's probably this). Hugely juicy offering, 100% botrytized grapes but very clean and pure, packed with a mass of fruit flavors and an endless finish. Yummy.
