Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Le Bon Pasteur

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Part of a tasting of about a dozen 2001s... For me, there was something a bit volatile on the nose here. Cherry syrup. I wonder about the overall balance and long-term ageability... Just did not seem as well-constructed as most of the other wines today. Hmmm.

  • 2001 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Tasted along with about a dozen other 2001s, so forgive the short TN... Next to the Montrose '01, this was softer / more lush. A chocolate note. Dark fruit. Thick, with nice texture and balance, and a lingering finish. Impressive.

  • 2001 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Tasted along with about a dozen other 2001s, so forgive the short TN... Big, slightly dusty tannins. Black fruit. Fairly old-school in style. A bit lean compared to the '01 Cos d'Estournel (see TN)tasted along side it, though still balanced and quite impressive. One of the better wines of the tasting.

  • 2001 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Tasted with about 12 other 2001s - sorry about the short note... Did not show as much tannin as a number of the other '01s today. More up-front, softer fruit. Also showed a bit more obvious oak than most. Black fruit, licorice, fairly lush overall. Very nice.

  • 2001 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted as part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting. Lightest wine among the Pauillacs, St. Juliens and St. Estephes today. Fruit leaning more towards the red side, compared to the blacker fruit shown by the majority of the wines we tried. Probably more of a mid than long-term ager. Nice, but slightly outclassed by most of the other 01s here, IMO...

  • 2001 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted as part of a 2001 tasting, so forgive the brief note... Fairly sizeable tannin / acid structure, though it softened considerably with a couple hours of air. Dark fruit and little earth; tobacco. The group agreed that this was one of the better values in the line-up...

  • 2001 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Part of a 2001 tasting. Big and structured. Quite tannic. Good texture and weight. Dark fruit with underlying earth; a hint of cocoa and spice. There was a slight hollowness in the middle, but I'm not complaining too much here, as it was still quite impressive - though obviously this was not the most flattering age to try this wine...

  • 2001 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting - pardon the short TN... Large scaled. Lots of tannin, though seemingly well-balanced. Spicy oak. Coffee in with the black fruit. One of the better wines of the tasting, IMO. However, I thought the '01 Lynch-Bages and Pontet Canet were right up there with it, for significantly less $$.... Hmmm.

  • 2001 Château Pontet-Canet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting. For value (sub-$40) this was one of the standouts of the tasting for me. Med weight; good balance and structure filled out nicely by fairly lush balack fruit. Tobacco notes. Chocolate. A touch of oak. Very nice.

  • 2001 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting. This was one of my least favorite wines of the tasting, due to a dirty / animal note that really seemed to stand out for me... An off bottle??

  • 2001 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted with about a dozen other 2001s... Black+ red fruit, coffee, a pruney / licorice (Dr. Pepper?) note showed with air. Certinaly good, but I liked several of the other wines better today: '01 Lynch-Bages, Pichon Lalande, Ducru, Montrose, Cos d'Estournel, and even Pontet-Canet...

  • 2001 Château Quinault L'Enclos

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting. I would like to have tried this along side more wines from the right bank, but the group concentrated more on the left today... I got chocolate covered cherries from this one. Nice, but for me not as impressive as a number of the other wines today. Sorry for the short TN.

  • 2001 Château Fombrauge

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting. This one really surprised the group. Considering it was by far the least expensive wine ($30 retail before any discount), it certainly held its own. Smokey; dark fruit - a little blueberry, too? A bit of oak. Again, I would like to try this along side more examples from the right bank...
