Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1993 Domaine du Closel-Château des Vaults Savennières Clos du Papillon 91 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Tasted blind – light to medium gold in colour. Notes of charred lemon, honey with hints of floral and pleasant oxidized aromas. Hints of botrytis but then finishes bone dry. A little boozy on the finish as well. Drinking perfectly. Excellent.

  • 2008 Domaine A. Cailbourdin Pouilly-Fumé Les Cris 89 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

Tasted blind – light lemon in colour. Grassy and herbaceous notes on the nose remind me more of a NZ SB than a Loire SB. Palate is all Loire though with citrus fruits and nice minerality. Great acidity. Drinking well now but may be even better in a few years. Very good. 89+

  • 2008 Domaine Pascal Cotat Sancerre La Grande Côte 84 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Pale lemon, almost clear in colour. Very muted on the nose at first (although was served too cold). After it warmed up in the glass a bit, nose offered hints of citrus and minerality. Similar on the palate with decent acid but not much going on. A little hot on the finish. Disappointing at this stage but this should develop and put on some weight with time. Average. 84+

  • 2006 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Tasted blind – pale lemon in colour. Light notes of citrus fruits on the nose with oxidative aromas as well. There was also a distinct chemical note on the nose that didn’t seem to blow off. Decent acidity with a lighter body. Interesting more so than delicious. The person who brought this wine thinks it may have been an off bottle. I still enjoyed it however although there were mixed feelings around the table. No rating.

  • 1995 Château d'Yquem 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Tasted blind – medium amber in colour. Pronounced nose of apricot, charred honey and caramel. Full and heavy and rich in the mouth with a long finish and acidity to balance the sweetness. Blast of caramelized sugar on the finish. Tasting pretty good now. Outstanding.
