Introduction

The theme was Pinots for the Masters Golf Tournament. Domestics in the $35-40 range. Nine of us joined in for some great food and exciting golf on the back nine.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light gold color. Nose shows the petrol, lemon, citrus, slate. The palate shows crisp acidity, with a lighter body, mineral, citrus. Medium finish. Not quite as round and full bodied as the '07 Bernkasteler Badstude Kab, but very nice. 89-90pts.

  • 2002 Chehalem Pinot Noir Stoller Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Briary, woodsy on the nose, with black cherry. The palate show reasonable depth, subtle heat that resolved after 15 minutes or so, dark red fruits, and a lengthy finish. This was pretty slow out of the gate being dominated by the wood, but opened and integrated to let the fruit show. This was a 90 that improved to 91 over an hour. Tied for group #3 with the 2003 Cristom.

  • 2003 Springhill Cellars Pinot Noir McLain Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Dark red color. Raspberry, strawberry, earth, slightly smokey on the nose, opening up nicely over about 20 minutes after aeration. Palate shows great structure, with round tannins, medium body, cedar, spice and red fruits, great acid, long finish. This was my WOTN and group WOTN by a hair. Really a nice wine, sadly it was my only one.

  • 2005 Walter Hansel Winery Pinot Noir Cahill Lane 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Medium dark red color. This did not really impress out of the gate. There was a little alcohol on the nose and palate. The nose showed really ripe dark red fruits, later a very nice forest floor quality emerged with some spice. The palate started off with ripe fruit. This settled down nicely after a good 30-45 mintes and showed the acidity, earth tones and fruit in a much more balanced fashion. Very nice at that point elevating the score from 90 to a 92.

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Medium dark red color. Nice nose with raspberry dominating and strawberry in the background, cedar, and spice. The plalate is consisten with the nose and shows crisp acidity, adding a vanilla note to a medium finish.

This was a little lean on the palate and fairly simplistic, but a decent everyday drinker.

  • 2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Dark red color. The nose is somewhat closed with hints of mint, cedar, earth, and dark red fruits. The palate is dense and concentrated with a nice back bone of tannins and acidity. This just isn't open for business the way it has been in the past. This needs some decanting and probably would benefit from some additional time in the cellar.

  • 2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Dark red color. Nose took about 15 minutes to open despite aerating. The nose as always is wonderful: beautiful perfumed florals, red fruits, cranberry, earth notes, mushrooms, and spices. The palate is lush in the mouth and concentrated with great depth. Always a treat. 93-94pts. Group number 2, edged out by the 2003 Springhill by one vote!

Closing

We had some really nice wines, several that I had never had before, including the Springhill Cellars that my wife brought. The voting was done on a 3-2-1pts system for 1st though 3rd place, with 27 first place votes available. The WOTN was the 2003 Springhill Cellars McClain Vineyard with 14 points. The 2nd place WOTN was the 2007 St. Innocent White Rose with 13 points, followed by a tie for 3rd with 7pts each for the 2003 Cristom Reserve and the 2002 Chehalem Stoller.
