Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2010 Clos Floridene Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves

Lightly grassy, varietal nose. Crisp, bright orange peel in the mouth with good acidity and a touch of wood. Good interplay between the Sauvignon bite and Semillon texture.

Flight 2 (8 Notes)

  • 2009 Château Haut-Vigneau

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Medium color. Herbal aromatics. Medium weight, very smooth, polished feel with adequate acidity. Very approachable now, reasonable length. This has real quality and character at this modest price.

  • 2009 Château Rollan de By

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

Fairly deep. Graphite. Leaner feel, blackberry fruit, good acids, some herbs. Tannic but not shut. Surprisingly classic and another tremendous value for the intermediate term.

  • 2009 Château Ormes de Pez

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Deep center. One of the ripest noses of the flight. Good volume with some wood showing. Chunky and simple, enlivened a bit by some herbs, but in the final analysis, dull and unexciting.

  • 2009 Château Langoa Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Deeply colored. Already fragrant. This is the roundest, most lush of all of the wines today. Oregano, perceptible wood, chocolatey finish. Acidity and tannins assert themselves on the end to keep the wine fresh and avoid a feeling of overconcentration. Should be really good with enough time.

  • 2009 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Even darker than the Langoa. Sweaty, tannic nose. As dense as its stablemate but not as glossy or lush. Powerful acids, more gripping tannins. Greener flavors, more closed and finer than the Langoa. Clearly one for the long haul. Classic Claret. Excellent.

  • 2009 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very deep center. Lighter style, herbal flavors (Merlot?). The most mineral of all the wines today. Elegant package, high acidity for this vintage. Not the most generous wine, in fact, this really needs time to flesh out. Will it prove over time that it has enough stuffing? One of the most difficult wines to read at this point. The Bartons seem to be more reliable bets.

  • 2001 Château Lanessan

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Medium center with maturing rim. Candied fruit and some secondary perfume. Lighter, good acidity, still some retained sweetness of fruit. Pretty good until it falls off midpalate leading to a short finish. OK, still not a bad deal for current drinking given the $20 price tag.

  • 2000 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Medium ruby with some browning. Anise and tobacco scents. Medium to lighter weight. Supple, complex and relatively soft with some late tannins. Good length. Very good now, amazingly open for a 2000.
