Introduction

My Chicago Burgundy group got together for another wonderful dinner at Sepia, focusing on Echezeaux from several top producers form just 3 of the top lieux-dits in Echezeaux. some wonderful wines, a few disappointments.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 1988 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Started with incredible spice aromas - lots of dark baking spice with lots of black fruit and hints of emerging mushroom. Same blackberry and black cherry flavors that are still very precise and fresh with less earthy character than shown on the nose. Lots of elegant spice showing tarragon, black pepper, and clove. Very fine, smooth tannins vs. most 1988s. Finish is very long and elegant, not overwhelming or powerful, but really enjoyable in every way.

  • 1995 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Opened, double decanted one hour before serving. Very lean black fruit on nose with spice hints. Good fruit on palate, but somewhat lost behind fairly prominent acidity. Black fruit on palate with spice hints. A bit disjointed and off-kilter. Hard to tell when/where this will emerge from its curent state which see s mostly shut down.

  • 1996 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Slightly corked. At first seemed just muddy, but the cork character continued to emerge and expand.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 1999 Forey Père et Fils Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Open, double decanted approximately 90 minutes before served. Mostly similar to another bottle from a few months ago. Floral start with ripe fruit and really wonderful Asian five spice. Dense black fruit on palate with wonderful spice that is nicely supported by good acids, tannins and overall structure. Great textures improve with more time in glass, this has clear long-term potential to improve. Quite impressive.

  • 1999 Domaine Francois Lamarche Echezeaux 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Open, double decanted approximately 90 minutes before serving. started with plenty of red fruit and spice on nose. Big tannins from middle to finish. With more time in glass, this became more rustic and slightly more coarse, certainly less charming.

  • 1999 Louis Jadot Echezeaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Big ripe fruit on nose with lots of intense spice. If tasted blind, I never would have expected this was form 2001 from the ripe start, but the palate was ore classic, lean and characteristic of the 2001 vintage. Fairly lean and precise flavors come through, very linear and long. very easy to enjoy, but this has a Burgundy palate for people who really like Burgundy.

  • 2001 Daniel Bocquenet Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Incredibly impressive in every way. Lean red fruit aromas with lots of fresh herb and spice. Big, burly flavors with wonderful spice flavors. Everything comes across completely harmonious today. Powerful finish. This is just a baby today, clearly still years away from its peak drinking window.
