Extensive tasting dedicated to Bandol, while the wines of Domaine Tempier are the thread of this afternoon.
All wines served non-blind
Iron, blood, cloves, mixed spice, undergrowth. Mediuim body and length. Clear and pure. Drink sooner rather than later. 16/20

There's still some youthful freshness in its acidity. Excellent balance. Allegedly not the best year here, but this is drinking great right now. Beefstock, tar, iron, and minerals. Refined and pretty. 17/20

Feral and brutal on the nose. Smoke, minerals, licorice, lavas, chocolate and coffee. Lots of concentration, dark, brooding and tannic. Powerful wine, little finesse. 16.5/20

Double-decanted 4 hrs prior to tasting. Beguilingly complex nose of horsestable, ink, tar, hot rocks, blackberries, prunes and dates. Open and flattering, clear, pure and elegant. Rusticity adds depth and interest to this wine, but is not overbearing. Very good. 17,5/20. Drink now - 3 years.

Still somewhat closed, reticent. Good concentration, dark and dense. Youthful mouthfeel. Slightly drying in the back, but otherwise vital and fiery. Compact and complex dark fruit, spicy bay leaf. Very nice wine. 17/20

Caramel, butterscotch, very soft and friendly compared to the Bandols next to it. Seems young. Higher dosage of Grenache in the mix, that's for sure. A bit reductive and licquor-like. A decent wine, but felt kinda out of place in this tasting.16.5/20

Dense and concentrated, still quite fruity. Mouthfilling and broad in the middle, alas the finish is clipped and slightly bitter. 16/20

Strikingly fresh red fruit, but there's also band-aid, wall paint and oxidation notes. Drying in the finish. Tainted? Or just OTH? 14/20

Very tight, very dark, very closed. Subdued aromatics. Decaying leaves? Mossy rocks? Flawed.

Beautiful wine, very elegant, though quite 'modern' in its flavour profile. Slightly sweet nose of rosehips and grenade. Smooth and soft, somewhere between a Hermitage and a St. Julien with a Napa twist. I suspect that this is nearing the end of its drinking plateau, so drink up. 17.5/20

Though the structure still stands tall, this is has drying tannines in the back and fruit is fading. Still some blackberries left, together with lots of bayleaf, licorice, iodine, blood and iron. Has just passed its peak IMHO. 15/20

Abundant use of luxurious, stylish oak. Cigars, fragile red fruit. Seems kind of elegant for Montus CP. Faint hint of sweetness, round and supple, though the finish is still very tannic. I hope the fruit survives... 16.5/20

Sweet, macerated fruit, modernistic mouthfeel. This is a very well made - no! well designed - wine. It's fresh, it's vivacious, especially considering its age, and shows some nice maturity nuances. But it doesn't have a soul. It didn't connect. 16/20

Smoke, grafite, pencil shavings. Acidity seems tired and old. But the fruit is ripe and round, slightly macerated. The was a tinge of oxidation that seemed to blow off every now and then, but it kept reoccuring. 14.5/20

Tongling fresh fruit, floral. Good concentration and very refreshing. Hint of sulphur. Though from humbler origins than most other wines in this tasting, I thought this was very tasty and palatable. 16/20

Fresh fruit and salty minerality. Doesn't have the concentration of a top-vintage, but has great harmony, balance and definition. Lots of finesse, graceful cherry fruit. A wonderful achievement. Drink it young, drink it now! 17.5/20

This clearly more simple, less aristocratic, than the other Cuvees. Although the style is certainly recognisable, it is far less complex. Juicy and tasty, for sure, but more open and straightfroward. 15.5/20

Great harmonies! Fresh and graceful, slightly more sweet and warm than the accompanying Cabassaou. Spices, garrigue, power, crunchy red and black fruit. Lovely wine. 17/20

This wine still feels unbelievably young and primary. Complex and fragrant sniffer, great faicheur and elegance. Beautiful now or within 3 years. 17.5/20

Somewhat denser and more outdoorsy than Migoua 98. Great savage personality, blackberries, laurel, licorice. Wonderful earthy minerality and the comforting feel sunheated bricks. Magnificant wine and ready to drink. 18/20

Much stronger and more feral than the other 2 '98-bottlings in this flight. Orange zest, blackberries, fig compote. Also treebark, black olives and pipe tobacco. Very nice. 17.5/20

This one is in a sweet spot right now. Very juicy, sappy and tasteful. Not as complex as the accompanying Tempiers, but very well made. Cassis, garrigue, saddle leather. A wine made for drinking, not contemplating on. Playful and well balanced. Very good 17/20

Probably the most modern Bandol on the list tonight. High octane, lots of alcohol, sweet entry, low acidity. Chocolate covered cherries; in fact it reminded me of a 'Schwarzwalder Kirsch'-cake. 15/20

Cuddly and loveable, a real charmer. But it also lacks personality. Garrigue, cherrypie, spicebox and cigars. Slightly hot finish. Drink now. 16/20

One combined impression of 3 wines. This was a great flight which showed us the differences between these three cuvees in a wonderful way. Migoua is the graceful one, the most feminine wine. Still very convincing and strong. Cabassaou has more Mourvedre and therefore is more rustic, stubborn and unforgiving, warranting cellar time. For me, Tourtine is the golden mean. This is all about balance, combining nobility and the countryside. Like a horse stable.

Cooked? Oxidated? Don't know. But no good.

This is very complete and deep. Complex bouquet of layered red and black fruit and minerals. Also cigar ash, tar, animal fur, chocolate shavings and undergrowth. Still holding back a little. Fantastic wine 18/20

Round, plush and sultry. Sexy wine, very tasty and seductive. Thick brambly fruit, school paint, black olives. Some notes of reduction? Very nice wine. 17/20

Acescence. Smells like sauerkraut. Undrinkable.

Way too young. Still extremely primal. Aromatics and complexity are tucked away. Hard to judge at the moment, because of the crackingly young fruit. Can't see through that, at the moment. 15/20

Very lactic. Smells like a blackberrysmoothie. On the palate its more focussed and quite big in the mouth. Decent wine which could improve in 3 to 5 years time and gain some extra points. 15/20

Really creamy texture, round, supple, juicy and fruity. Very lively and friendly wine. Not overly complex but damn tasty! 16.5/20

Already very approachable. Open and fresh style. Hard to evaluate now, but I like the earthy complexity and the laser like purity of the red and black fruit mix: raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, cherry. Needs at least 3 years to strut its stuff. For now, 16.5/20

This has more depth and flesh, when compared to the corresponding Migoua. Earthy, meaty, densily packed wine, but with great balance and complexity. Will be fabulous in 3-5 years time. Excellent cellaring potential. 16.5/20 for now

Pretty wine. Very clean and fresh, but hardly any acidity. So, it fails to keep my attention for a longer time. No real complexity either. Actually, this is quite simple. 14.5/20

Flabby, lacking tension, excitement and acidity. Pure, clean and clear, but uninteresting. 14/20

2007 Domaine Tempier Bandol Blanc
France, Provence, Bandol
This feels like a tyoical white Provence wine to me. Spices and herbs are in the lead. Tiny hint of citrusfruit. Seabreeze, stony minerals. Light-footed and refreshing, but not very distinctive. Nice wine, but very young.
