Introduction

Tooch was in town, so a small group of us needed a proper place to drink some Clos Vougeots

Flight 1 - Opening bubbly and white burg (2 Notes)

Drat on the Fevre. It was somewhat drinkable, but it was disappointing to drink it

  • 2002 Henri Goutorbe Champagne Grand Cru Special Club 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

nose: very good depth with a layered nose of green apples, tart citrus tones, white fruits, and crushed stones. This is a real delight to smell right now as it just shows a lot of class

taste: lovely medium/full feel with medium+ acidity that is still noticeable. There is a fatness to the feel and tones of tart citrus tones, green apples, pears, crushed rocks and some bits of white fruits

overall: a lovely champagne right now. This certainly could use some further age, but one wouldn't be faulted for opening one up right now.

  • 2002 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Flawed

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

and the premox bug rears it's head. There are tones of gunflint, pears, and apples. Sadly there is some oxidation showing through as well and it only gets worse with air. Palate is flabby an showing premox as well. Another one bites the dust

Flight 2 - Clos Vougeots (4 Notes)

  • 1996 Faiveley Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

nose: tight nose at first and unforgiving. It does show itself a bit with tones of earth, dark red cherries, dark red fruits and spices. Good depth with a very masculine quality to it

taste: extremely good medium feel with very noticeable medium/high acidity and some chewy tannins. Balanced with very good depth and silky tones of earth, dark spices, and a good amount of dark red fruits

overall: this is still very young. Has the 96 acidity to it and certainly shows it. This had a nice dark red color to it with some rimming, but this was still a young wine. Some of the sternness seems to be pulling back, but it needs a good deal of air at this time

  • 2001 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

nose: this is still primary but open for business with tones of red fruits, cherries, spices tones, roses and some bits of earth. Excellent depth and very classy

taste: silky medium body with medium/high acidity and good supporting tannins. Very well balanced with elegant tones of red fruits, cherries, spice tones, earth and incense

overall: this was still very primary, but ever so lovely. There is real good depth to this and a lot of style. This feels like it can become a real stunner with more age to it

  • 1997 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

nose: very earth driven nose filled with mushrooms, spice tones, dark red fruits, chalk and some cherries. Good complexity but lacking a slight bit of depth

taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and a silky feel. Well balanced with solid depth and tones of mushrooms, spice tones, dark red fruits and some bits of cherries

overall: this is perfect right now. It is well developed with some good class. Well balanced, it is lacking a slight bit of depth that one would expect from a grand cru

  • 1997 Fery-Meunier Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

nose: very aromatic and earth-bound nose filled with tones of spices, perfumes, incense, dark red fruits and some cherries. Very good depth with a real perfumed style to the nose

taste: medium/full bodied with real class and grand cru depth on the palate. Polished with medium+ acidity and balanced tones of spices, incense, dark red cherries and some earth tones

overall: I wasn't familiar with this producer, but this was a beautiful wine. This grew with more air and really showed off its class. This feels like it's in a great place right now and is a delight to drink

Flight 3 - Ending white and sticky (2 Notes)

  • 1991 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia 92 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

nose: complex and deeply intriguing nose of bleu cheese, some sherry tones, citrus and white fruits. This is definitely a love it or hate it nose, but it has a good amount of depth as well

taste: full bodied with medium acidity, but lacks a slight bit on the mid and finish. Still excellent depth with tones of bleu cheese, citrus tones, white fruits and some beeswax

overall: I don't drink enough Lopez Heredia. The whites aren't for everyone, but I love them and this was extremely enjoyable. It opened up with more air and really showed off it's aromatics

  • 2003 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

nose: very savory nose with tones of nectarines, pears, creme brulee and bits of apricots. Nice depth, but this seems fairly mature for such a young sauternes

taste: medium/full bodied with lower acidity and tones of nectarines, pears and apricots. Well balanced with nice depth and coming off very nice

overall: Not sure if this bottle was advanced or if it could be the wine on the whole. It wasn't cloying but it was lacking a bit of acidity that would be nice

Closing

There were only 5 of us, but that was all that was needed for a great night. Sadly there was one premox'd bottle, but other than that, the wines showed wonderfully.
