from barrel Cherry bonbons on the nose with some tart cassis and black raspberry. A little thin on the palate but nice spice. Pretty good finish for a Bourg from barrel. Potential Burgundy Thursday wine.
from barrel Explosion of red fruit on the nose a la Bergstrom in fruity intensity, but good. Lots of acidity still. Maybe more malo on the way. Lots of clove with dark fruit. Will be fun to track.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
from barrel Texture difference from village wine immediately apparent, even on the nose. Much thicker on the palate. Flowery and already soft fruit mixture much more complex. Cassis, light blackberry, dark cherry, light wood. Great extraction without going over the top.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
from barrel Obvious difference in altitude from Suchots. Fruit brighter with cherry and especially “groseilles” (red currants). Clove spice is up front. A little flabby on the finish. Still long and wonderful but I prefer the Suchots.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
from barrel Obvious increase in power from the 1er crus. Really nice fruit/acid balancealready. Black fruits dominate but a nice layer of lean red cherry to anchor. A great unexpected sweetness on the finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru
from barrel More focused and balanced than the Vougeot on the nose. Fat right now, but strangely hiding some fruit. Not as fizzy as the others—maybe farther along on development. Almost chalky in spots. One of the weirdest and most wonderful finishes ever. Red fruits dominate.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
from bottle Echezeaux Grand Cru—Very fat on the palate with soft tannins, especially for ’08. Nice integration of fruits with a little citrusy tartness to balance. Love the sweet crème de cassis on the mid-palate. Finishes well.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
from bottle More power on the nose than the Echezeaux. Still a dominance of black fruits. Tannins more pronounced. Teeth staining. Already soft. Will be a knockout.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru
from bottle So approachable already. Lots of upfront red fruit. Soft clove. Velvety tannins. Nice long dark fruits on the finish. Typical mildly sweet fruit without being stewed. Must search—amazing!
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Much creamier on the nose than the village. The hazelnut appears. More citrus and a little quince. Maybe some star anise. Has a wonderful acidity. Elegant. Love it!
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Holy Crap it tastes like Puligny. Went to the vineyard map on the wall wall and found “Charmes” (right next to Puligny). My proudest moment of the trip. Racy. Exotic. A little petrol. Creamy mouthfeel. More tropical fruit. More oak too but the fruit/acidity can take it.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Great ripe cherry nose. Really nice. Would like to take to a club meeting for a blind tasting and see who guesses Meursault 1er cru Rouge! Nice balance.
