Introduction

Chris Hughes invited a group over for dinner and a tasting of "high scoring" wine with a relationship...that turned out to mostly be a fascinating Quilceda Creek vertical. Well done! My notes seem to be missing a few bottles Chris opened.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 1990 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

    USA, Washington

Double blind tasting of what turned out to be a 10 year Quilceda vertical, with this is added as by far the oldest wine in the lineup. Clearly mature nose of black fruit, leather and earth, with a bit of mint. Flavors are also clearly evolved but less interesting than the aromas. Moderate length.

  • 2003 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

    USA, Washington

Double blind tasting of what turned out to be a 10 year Quilceda vertical. Massive black fruit on nose. Hot and excessive in almost every way, I thought this an outlier amongst all the wines, and was surprised it was just one vintage apart from the 2004s I thought sensational. I don't have all my notes on all wines, but this was my least favorite vintage tonight.

  • 2002 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, Washington

Double blind tasting. Plum and black cherry aromas with cassis, mint chocolate and moderate spice. Very ripe, powerful ans tannic on palate. Clearly lots of concentrated fruit with interesting potential, but frankly not supplying lots of pleasure tonight.

  • 2004 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Double blind tasting - turned out to be a 10 year Quilceda vertical. Plum and chocolate on nose with good spice form oak. Big yet balanced fruit on palate, showing cassis, plum, black cherry and that same chocolate. Great texture, balanced enough to keep the alcohol in check. While I can't find my notes on all the wines, this was certainly my favorite tonight, followed by the 2004 Galitzine, well ahead of other well regarded, well rated vintages that I found less balanced.

  • 2004 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard 94 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Double blind tasting of what turned out to be a 10 year Quilceda vertical, with this bottle as a "ringer." Black fruit that cam across as very accessible. Good notes of spice and chocolate, with every component in harmony. Not as intense as the 2004 Cabernet, but very similar if just slightly "less" in most regards, this was my 2nd favorite wine tonight. I guess I like Quilceda's 2004 results.

  • 2005 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Ultra-ripe black fruit aromas and flavors, but nicely supported with some big spice, mint ahd hints of underbrush. I would have liked this a lot more if it weren't so dominated by ripe fruit and didn't show heat on finish.

  • 2006 Quilceda Creek Merlot 89 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Double blind tasting of what turned out to be a 10 year Quilceda vertical, with this bottle as a "ringer." Black cherry and plum aromas and flavors with a reasonable amount of spice and chocolate. Lush, round textures. Simple finish.

  • 2006 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Double blind tasting of what turned out to be a 10 year Quilceda vertical. Black currant, black cherry and cassis aromas. Also dark chocolate and espresso. Plenty of black fruit flavors, showing a bit more ripe character than I'd prefer, so hopefully the lushness evolves into a bit more elegance with more time in the cellar.

  • 1995 Château Tirecul La Gravière Monbazillac Cuvée Madame 97 Points

    France, Southwest France, Dordogne, Monbazillac

Aromas of orange zest, ripe peach and magnolia. Intense ripe fruit persistent all the way through. incredibly sweet but nowhere approaching cloying. Great textures. This doesn't seem to have the same acidity as great Sauternes, so it will be interesting to see where it stands in another 10 years. I have almost a case left so I will get to revisit this wine periodically.
