Introduction

Dinner at home with M/F and B/B

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

With heirloom and sundried tomato Bruschetta...

  • 1996 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Rosé 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Orange colour. Nose offered hints of yeast with mainly strawberry and floral notes. Really nice acidity on the palate with red berry and creamy strawberry flavours. Good length and drinking well but still quite young showing good intensity and energy. This should be even better in 2-3 years. Excellent. 91+

  • 1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Light to medium straw colour looking very young. On the nose this was very young and tight with aromas of citrus and yellow fruits and once it opened up a tad giving some toasty and nutty notes along with yeast too. In the mouth this had fantastic verve along with bright acidity and a fresh citrus finish. Mouthfeel is deep and precise with a fine mousse and beautifully minerality. This beauty is just starting to reveal its potential. Based on this bottle I’ll open my next bottle in 3-5 years. Outstanding. 93+

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

With yam and ginger soup; heirloom tomato and Burrata salad...

  • 2000 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Charlemagne Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

I’ve had the good fortune of having this wine a few times, all from the same source, so I know what this wine should be about. A real shame this bottle was off.

  • 2006 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

I had this yesterday during a lunch and tonight’s bottle was quicker to open up but didn’t quite hit the heights of yesterday’s bottle. Between my note from yesterday and Matt’s note, there’s not much to add. Nose shows generous notes of lemon, salinity and some oaky aromas that I wasn’t getting yesterday. Similar profile on the palate with decent acidity and length. This bottle seemed a touch more advanced than yesterday’s bottle. Drink or hold. Excellent.

  • 2006 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Like Les Clos, I had this yesterday and tonight’s bottle didn’t show as well. This Valmur shows more of the ’06 vintage character than Les Clos with more ripeness and roundness. There are the telltale Chablis characteristics though; saline, lemon, minerals, but those play a background role to the ripe and rich fruit. The acidity in yesterday’s bottle seemed to be more prevalent as well. Drink or hold. Very good.

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

With pan seared duck breast, strawberry and fig balsamic reduction, pearl onion, potato and pear hash...

  • 1990 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Double decanted back into the bottle and let it sit opened for 4-5 hours before serving. Great mature Rhone nose with pomegranate, dark raspberries, earth, leather, meat and sweet funk. On the palate this is lighter in weight and shows delicacy along with great concentration of the dark and sweet fruits. Dry and firm tannins paired with crisp acidity and a long finish red fruited finish. This is drinking extremely well right now. Outstanding.

  • 1996 Tardieu-Laurent Cornas Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

This was a beautiful bottle of Cornas. Earthy and meaty nose with darker fruits, salty meats and iron. On the palate this was more polished than a recent bottle of ’98 Clape, but this TL still showed some nice rusticity which I look for in Cornas. Dusty tannins and decent acidity wrap things up on the medium length finish which offers dark red fruits and more meaty notes. A really nice wine that’s drinking very well now but with more to come. Excellent. 91+

  • 2001 Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

This was showing quite youthfully with a perfumey nose along with ripe pinot fruit and notes of floral and licorice. A really pretty nose. Palate offers pure crunchy red fruits, spice and maybe a hint of black fruits on the lengthy finish. Fine tannins and bright acidity round out the silky mouthfeel that shows lithe and great balance. This is young but approachable and ultimately needs 3-5 years to show its best. Excellent. 90+

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

With various cheeses...

  • 1995 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Matt opened this in the morning and slow-ox’d for 10 hours. The nose here was beautiful and classic and everything you would want from a teenage Pauillac. Pronounced notes of pencil shavings, blackcurrant, plums and cigar box with a touch of sweet funk. This profile carries onto the palate where on the entry the tannins seem soft and supple but towards the finish they gain grip and firmness and remind you that this is far from mature. Plenty of acidity to match the tannins and pure blackcurrant flavours and there’s a nice sweetness on the palate that adds to the complexity. This is great to drink now with proper aeration but another 5+ years should allow this beauty to offer even more. Excellent. 92+

  • 1999 Château Pajzos Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 88 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

No formal notes. Amber colour. This was very good but far from what I’m expectations were. Sweet nose with notable botrytis and sweet apricot notes. Sweet fruit on the palate that was a tad too rich for my liking and didn’t quite have the acidity I was expecting. Overall still very nice but I had higher hopes for this. Very good.

Flight 5 (1 Note)

With cigars...

  • 1985 Graham Porto Vintage 91 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

No formal notes. Notes of dark cherries, Christmas cake and spice. Bright and youthful on the palate with good concentration and acidity with a long finish. Young but drinkable. Needs 5-10 years. Excellent. 91+
