Introduction

The host provides a couple of warm up wines, and selects a theme of 8 wines, served double blind to the group. The warm ups are tasted and evaluated as members arrive, then unveiled prior to the main tasting. The main tasting is done in one flight- all 8 wines are poured and evaluated, all the while being discussed. Everyone settles on their guess as to the theme, and if possible, specific wines. Each taster ranks the wines from 1 to 8, with 1 point awarded for their favorite. The scores are tallied and unveiled from last place (most points) to first place (least points). After the main tasting we enjoy dinner and a few nonblind reds and dessert wines.

Flight 1 - I. Warm ups (3 Notes)

The Brocard, opened the night before, was tasted nonblind. Rich knew we had some and wanted to make sure we received a taste.

Flight 2 - II. Themed tasting, double blind. (8 Notes)

  • 2000 Michel Magnien Clos de la Roche 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Garnet color; a bit of bricking. Aromas of tobacco, spices and forest floor. There's an austerity on the palate; a bit thin and light featuring flavors of red cherry and spice. Opens further in the glass to show dark fruit and meat notes. Gains weight too, with plenty of dark fruit and spice, along with forest floor notes ending with a long finish. 90-91 pts.

Flight 3 - III. Nonblind dinner & dessert wines. (11 Notes)

Flight 4 - IV. Bonus wines! (5 Notes)

As the tasting was winding down and only a few of us were left, I mentioned to Rich how some of the wines tonight reminded me of the 1999 Jadot Corton-Pougets he had opened for us some years earlier, and what a treat that wine was. He excused himself for a moment, and out came a bottle of the 1999 Jadot C-P whihc he had opened the night before. He and Dana hosted their good friend Eugenia and David Adelsheim the night before and opened some terrific bottles with them. One by one, we ended up tasting through their leftovers.

Closing

Thanks to Rich & Dana for another wonderful tasting and some great wines!
