Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2007 Canalicchio Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Medium red color. Decanted for 45 minutes. Drank 2 oz pour over 40 minutes. This was quite elegant and well integrated. The nose offered up earth, cherry, and spices. The palate was medium bodied with finesse, cherry, oak, spices, and nice soft tannins. The finish is medium. 90+pts.

  • 2006 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Dark red in color. 60 minute decant. Drank a 3oz pour over 60 minutes. This was a bit tight out of the gate, but it truly exploded after about 20-30 minutes. I wish I would have sat on this longer to enjoy it all in its full glory. The nose starts earthy and savory with a sweet note, spices, leather, black cherry then evolves into a wonderfully perfumed floral earthy goddess with layers of ripe berry fruit. The palate has nice depth, medium full body, fine tannins that feel lively and integrated, black cherry, dark berries, earth, leather, that follows to a long finish. A class act all the way. Probably needs a solid 90 minutes to 2 hour decant to really blossom. 93(+)pts.

  • 2008 La Massa Giorgio Primo 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very dark red color. Decanted for 90 minutes and aerated. Drank a 2oz pour over 60 minutes. A blend of M-50%, CS-45%, PV-5%. This was still tight on presentation, but it emerges fairly well over 30 minutes. Damp and earthy on the nose with a mild meaty quality, wood, blackberry, blackberry liqueur, spice and hints of anise. The palate is medium full bodied with some nicely layered fruits of blackberry, black cherry, blackberry liqueur, tart, charcoal, with quite a bit of spice and oak showing on the medium plus finish. Needs 2-4 years, but shows some really nice potential to improve. 92(+)pts.

  • 2007 Orma Toscana IGT 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Purple red color. Decanted for 45 minutes. Drank a 2 oz pour over 60 minutes.Blend of 40% CF, 40% M, and 20% CS). Wow, this is impressively complex immediately, wonderful perfume of florals and earth, with gorgeous fruits, blueberry pie, cassis, blackberry, tar, graphite, and a little scorched earth character. The palate is rich and full bodied, great black and blue fruits, baked blueberry and blackberry, nicely tart, earth, silky, minerals and very long finish. My and group WOTN.

  • 2007 Brancaia Ilatraia 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very dark red color. 45 minute decant. Drank a 2 oz pour over 60 minutes. The nose has a strong herbal character that I find somewhat but not entirely distracting, reminds me more of South America than Italy, subtle earth, vanilla, minerals, nice dark fruits, mild florals. The palate shows some nice fruit again, raspberry, blueberry, more dry, dark berries, medium body, mild to moderately green, with a medium plus finish.

  • 2006 Castello del Terriccio Tassinaia Toscana IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very dark red color. Decanted for 1 hour. Drank a 2 oz pour over 45 minutes. Blend of 34% Sang, 33% CS, and 33% M). Nose has dry earth, blueberry and cherry notes, oak. The palate has a very complex mix of fruits, with cherry out front, earth, minerals, leathery, berry, blueberry, and red currants, quite drying tannins, tart fruit, moderate oak still showing. Nice overall but in need of some time yet - give it a couple years. 90+(+)pts.

  • 2006 Tenuta di Biserno Il Pino di Biserno 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very dark purple red color. Decanted for 1 hour. Drank a 2oz pour over 60 minutes. Blend of 35% CF, 32% CS, 25% M, and 8% PV. This took a little glass time to resolve, it started off quite herbal and showed some alcohol on the finish. Remarkably, that character was completely gone within about 10 minutes. The damp earth really emerges on the nose then, followed by cherry, plum, and eventually rich cassis. The palate really has a nice velvety texture, full bodied, with lovely black fruits, black cherry, plum, and cassis, spice, tannins are round and firm yet. The finish is medium plus. I would still give this another two years. 91(+)pts.

  • 2003 Château Sociando-Mallet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Purple red color. 90 minute decant. Drank a 2 oz pour over 30 minutes plus. This is still dense, dark, full bodied, black fruits, firm tannins, tart, dry, tart cherry, still rather oaky. Very little change over almost 4 years. I don't think this will improve much, but I look for more integratiion and softer experience in another 5(?) years.

  • 2000 Árvay János Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 90 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Dark gold color. 1.5 oz pour over 30 minutes. Very similar to previous note. The nose has nice apricot and orange fruits, some vanilla. Very sweet on the palate with apricot, orange marmalade, spice, maybe a tad of honeyed quality. Somewhat one dimensional and lacks the acidity to improve more.
