Introduction

Morning tasting with David Croix.

Flight 1 - 2013 From Barrel (4 Notes)

We tasted a few more wine that I felt tougher to assess based on their still at the final stages of malolactic fermentation or being too gassy.

  • 2013 Camille Giroud Beaune 1er Cru

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel tasting at maison. Due to hail and the short crop, this is les Cras and Avaux combined in 2013. ML seemingly finished. All red berry and cherry right now, firmness coming through on moderate finish. Pure, pretty fruit.

  • 2013 Camille Giroud Volnay 1er Cru Santenots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Barrel tasting at maison. Bright red fruit aromas, same flavor profile on palate to start with more firm finish. Good sweet spice notes in background.

  • 2013 Camille Giroud Vosne-Romanée

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Barrel tasting at maison. Red cherry and berry with classic Vosne styled spice. Soft and accessible, slightly fat. From a single lieu-dit in Flagey, les Chalandins, which abuts Vosne, just by RN74.

  • 2013 Camille Giroud Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Barrel tasting at maison. Lots of rich black fruit aromas and flavors with very forward spice and fresh herbs. Good concentration, already in good balance. Moderate intensity for Chambertin.

Flight 2 - Some Wines From the Library (7 Notes)

  • 2007 Camille Giroud Corton-Clos du Roi 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Tasted at maison. Popped and poured. Red and black cherry aromas and flavors with some very good minerality. Firming tannins and good acidity were quite prominent to start, softened over the 10 minutes in glass. Should be a good bottle of wine today with more air, and best with food.

  • 2008 Camille Giroud Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted at the maison. Popped and poured. Red and black fruit with dense, meaty spice and sauvage hints. Started very firm on palate, very tight with lots of tannins and acidity, really begging for plenty more time in the cellar. Revisited approximately one hour later and it was significantly more enjoyable because (1) the structure certainly softened, (2) more enticing spice emerged.

  • 2006 Camille Giroud Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted at the maison. Popped and poured. Big black fruit aromas, that came across as slightly one-dimensional to start. Revisited an hour later, and more nuance emerged with layers of flavor. Still too young, this was much like another bottle opened in Chicago late 2013 that was also just teasing us with its potential. Better in at least a few more years.

  • 2004 Camille Giroud Latricières-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasting at domaine. Popped and poured. Mature black fruit with just trace hints of any underripe or otherwise green notes. Good flavors, but there is limited upside potential from here.

  • 1978 Camille Giroud Beaune 1er Cru Grèves

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Tasting at the maison. Popped and poured. Earthy, spicy aromas that started slightly musty with lingering red fruit, but more fruit emerged with more air. earthy elements slightly more prominent than the red fruit on palate as well. Good depth and power for its level. A slight assertive acidity came through at the end, so this would really have benefited from food.

  • 1976 Camille Giroud Volnay 1er Cru Champans

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Tasted at the maison. Popped and poured. Sweet, ripe red and black berries on nose and flavors to start. Palate firmed up middle to finish, showing more complexity and power along with more assertive tannins. Kept improving with more time in glass and more air. Good.

  • 1990 Camille Giroud Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Tasting at Maison. A real treat - this is a wine I did not previously know existing, and according to David comes from the old vines at Clos des Epeneaux. Enticing fresh black berry aromas with great spice and the faint hints of earth. Dense, meaty flavors with great structure and power that balance the massive fruit. Far better than the two bottles of the 1990 Comte Armand Clos des Epeneaux I've tried in the past two years.
