Introduction

Visiting with Mugnier is always a highlight when I get the opportunity. His modesty and honesty about each vintage gives me a good perspective on what to expect from his own wines and from the vintages in general. This time we got to taste the full lineup for two very differently styled vintages, plus a tasty treat at the conclusion. TGIF.

Flight 1 - 2013 From Barrel (6 Notes)

  • 2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Almost finished ML. All red fruit, forward and pleasurable already. Good energy and minerality, just a little simpler than in some of the best vintages.

  • 2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Barrel tasting at the domaine, this was the toughest wine for me to fairly assess given its current state in ML. All red cherry still coming through with moderate intensity and concentration. TN based on a single barrel, so might not accurately represent the final blend.

  • 2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Barrel tasting at the domaine, this is almost done with ML. Mostly showing red cherry and berry aromas and flavors, this is an elegantly styled Bonnes Mares with charming spice. Long and well textured with hints of concentration on finish. TN based on a single barrel, so might not accurately represent the final blend.

  • 2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Barrel tasting at the domaine, ML almost complete. Lacy and finely textured with great floral support for the red berry flavors and aromas. Nutmeg and fresh herbs also in background today. To me this was a good step up from the Bonnes Mares just tasted. TN based on a single barrel, so might not accurately represent the final blend.

  • 2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Barrel tasting at the domaine, this had also completed ML. Black cherry and berry aromas with licorice, black pepper. Black and red fruit flavors, again with nice spice throughout. Moderate intensity, I would expect this will be a charming younger drinking vintage for Marechale. TN based on a single barrel, so might not accurately represent the final blend.

  • 2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Barrel tasting at the domaine, this has completed ML. Superbly elegant. Red and black fruit with medium level of concentration for Musigny, but good spice from start-to-finish. Picks up weight in middle and end. Starts nice, finished great. TN based on a single barrel, so might not accurately represent the final blend.

Flight 2 - 2012 Racked, Ready to be Bottled (6 Notes)

  • 2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Tasting at the domaine, wine is racked and to be bottled next week. Strawberry and red cherry aromas with bursts of energy. Moderate spice. Good length and balance. Excellent Villages wine.

  • 2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Tasting at domaine. These are racked and to be bottled next week. Again red berry and cherry. Bigger than the Chambolle, with more density and spice. Perhaps slightly less nuance.

  • 2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Tasting at the domaine, this is racked and ready to be bottled week. Red and black cherry aromas and flavors. Starts out very lithe and elegant, picking up weight along the way towards more powerful, structured finish, where spice also gets nicely showcased.

  • 2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Tasting at the domaine. This is racked and ready to be bottled. Great cross-section of red fruit with some black berry hints as well. Seamless and persistent, this starts with great concentration and goes through a long, powerful finish, all while remaining lacy and weightless. An exceptional example of what Amoureuses should be. For me, this is as good as the Musigny.

  • 2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Tasting at domaine, this is also racked and ready for bottling. Bigger and more powerful red and black fruit on nose and palate. Exceptional density with the classic finesse and elegance of Musigny. Spice at end. Very long. Another great vintage for Mugnier.

  • 2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Tasted at the domaine. This is racked and ready for bottling. All black fruit, very meaty and firm. More classically NSG styled vs what I normally expect from Mugnier's Marechale or Primeaux in general, this will be well served by plenty of rest in the cellar. Very low yields largely due to hail, I believe 2/3 of the crop was lost.

Flight 3 - Tasty treat (1 Note)

  • 2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Tasted at the domaine, popped and poured. Slightly mature red berry aromas and flavors with modest earth notes on both. This is as much about spice as fruit, with lots of layers of flavor unfolding. Very long and very nuanced with great minerality and mouth feel. Very long finish with some really firm structure. Great now, but with clear potential to continue to improve.
