Introduction

I got together with some good friends and popped some fun summer wines. Lots of good cheese and some grilled chicken made for a great afternoon.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • NV Lamiable Champagne Grand Cru Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Nose of brioche, toasted almonds, graham cracker on top of zesty lemon-lime. On the palate this is nutty and rich with apricot and honey but also brisk with some minerals and seal salt. Long, quite complex. Bold but pretty.

  • 2013 Commanderie de la Bargemone Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence Rosé 87 Points

    France, Provence, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence

Zesty, tart white cherries, grapefruit, white flowers. Strawberries, saline, crisp minerals. Very pleasant Provence pink.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Chauviniere Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie Clisson 90 Points

France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie

Nose of seawater, salted lime and fresh cut flowers. Creamy but nervy at the same time, combined with lime, chalk and crushed rocks galore. It was quite closed down upon opening, so we decanted it and more started coming out, nuanced sea breeze, granite and pencil lead. Ageworthy for sure.

  • 2011 Bonny Doon Vineyard Le Cigare Blanc Beeswax Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Seco

Nose of cheese rind, salted lime, yellow apple, chalk, limestone and white tea. Creamy on the palate, with notes of chalk, white flowers and wax. Yellow plum and apricot jam mixes with notes of dried honey, cheese rind, green olive and tree sap. Gets funkier and crazier with air. Loving the medium body and the 12.5% alcohol. 62% Grenache Blanc and 38% Roussanne.

  • 2010 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett trocken 91 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

A darker apricot color than I’m used to seeing from most 2010s. Juicy apricots, white flowers and dried honey on the nose. Such high acid on the palate, I love it 2010s. Dry and clean but lots of richness from the honey, apricot jam and orange marmalade flavors. Tastes of grilled pineapple and spicy apple sauce, but the crisp acid makes it clear and refreshing throughout. Delicious but deserves time in the cellar. I'd love to retry this in 8-10 years.

  • 2005 Cameron Pinot Noir Abbey Ridge 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Cherry-cranberry colored. Smells of black cherries, plums, rhubarb and some smoke. Medium-bodied, smooth and juicy on the palate with fresh acid and fine tannins. Juicy black cherries, cranberries dusted with olive tapenade, pepper, pickles and smoke. Elegant but still fruity with some beef drippings, pickles and herbs. Still plenty of time ahead, but showing very well out of the decanter.
