    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Penetrating spicy chardonnay nose, high acid, creamy finsh. Grew toasty in the glass. This was a gorgeous, resolved, but still youthful grand burgundy. Amazed when told it was a 92, as it's so full of life.

  • 1985 Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Vieille Vigne

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Red fruited, lots of spice, savoury, smoky - just how a Vosne is meant to taste, and I'd have guessed an 85. Superb substance and grip - a notch up on anything we had at my Old Fourrier dinner a couple of years back. [Actually, this is my memory failing me - revisiting my notes, I see that this was the star of that dinner.]

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Meaty, savoury, cedary, very ripe and deep claret. Clearly first growth quality from a top year. Surprised to find it was 82 rather than 89 or 90, but the extra warmth and breadth did suggest right bank. Fantastic.

  • 1975 Château d'Yquem

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Dark gold, but fresh and perfectly balanced and we all immediately identified this as Yquem and no surprise that it was 75. Everything just right with this.
