Extremely light in color, almost clear, which is consistant with some other older Monfortino's I've had. While some thought it maderized, it was just a strange old wine. The fruit was muted - prunes. No question it was different, but I liked it in its unique way. We held a glass back over four hours, and while it didn't change materially for the better, it didn't fall apart.
A great bottle of wine. Smoke and ash on the nose, and in the mouth. Darker fruit. Surprisingly muscular, with lots of backbone and still quite youthful. Fabulous bottle of wine, I loved it.
Dave reminded me that I once called this Falletto light. The phrase is still accurate. More sweet and perfume like, rather than the earthiness typical for Giacosa. This bottle was not special, and it may have been the bottle rather than the wine.
A strong earthy texture. Still somewhat unyielding for a 90. Dirt (in the positive sense) in the mouth. My notes show a bold "yeah baby", I think Steve yelled it first! I really liked this wine.
Classier than the 90 Gaja Barbaresco. Forward fruit, but almost too straight down the line. A great wine, but interestingly, having had it side by side with the 90 Barbaresco a number of times, I've always preferred the Barbaresco.
I've alway liked this wine. Its been drinking nicely for years. Funky nose, a bit of barnyard combined with popcorn. Great in the mouth. Less classy than the 90's but a great drink.
This was in the final flight, and my notes are illegible. From memory - great quality, a touch less expressive than other bottles have been. Lots of very pleasant funk. A fun wine.

2001 Marcarini Barolo Brunate

A decent wine, but simple. Someone said "Barolo on training wheels", which was accurate.

This is drinking quite well right now. A bit short on the finish, but nice balance, and overall, a very nice wine.

1997 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Conteisa
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Tightly wound. Lots of oak. I didn't find it a very pleasant wine, and I was less positive about its longer term prospects than most of the table.

1996 Gaja Barbaresco
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Clearly the WOTF. Still tight and lots of oak, but this wine just grew and grew in the glass. A wine to watch!

Wow, a great wine. Very gritty and dirt, both on the nose and in the mouth. Great fruit. My note say "I love it, I love it". So, I love it.

1989 Prunotto Barolo Bussia

This wine didn't turn me on. It seemed weak, and the flavor profile wasn't interesting. The table liked it better.

Tight and unyielding, but at this point (final flight), I was ready to call it a night. I'd like to try it again.
