  • Again this is really open, some VA, dark cherry fruit with a really good meaty core. The age hardly showed here, feels at 5-10 years younger. Lots of brawn and oomph; blood orange, cherries, tobacco, roses. With some air, it actually turned a more burgundian, with touch of earthy and soil, and everything came together well. I liked the 2nd half performance better than the 1st.

  • Piedmont theme: Knew the identity of this wine but guesses around the table were at least a decade younger. Tobacco, brooding blackcurrant fruit with integrated oak. Modern but subtle and seamless, thought this was one of the best wines of the night. Drinking at peak.

  • Opened about two hours prior to service and allowed to breath. Two bottles were opened tonight from the same cellar and both corks showed some saturation but only through the first 1/3. No formal notes. A blend of Gaja’s 14 single-vineyards, 1997 “Barbaresco” pours a fairly youthful looking deep garnet color with moderate signs of sediment. The nose was initially shy but opened with air and revealed beautiful aromas of red and black fruits, tar, red and pink flowers, leather, dried earth and minerals. The structure is still going strong at 26 years young and I would still place the the tannins in the medium+ category. The finish is long and full of savory minerals. While I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the cork at this stage, these will be a joy to drink through 2037. This was a sublime paring with agnolotti stuffed with sweet corn, porcini and taleggio and a lot more of a classic representation of Barbaresco than I was expecting. Bravo!

  • Paul brought this bottle and opened two hours before serving. It was more powerful than we expected with medium body and wonderful aroma. This bottle was better than what we had two years before.

  • A lot of tobacco on this vintage with more cassise and less fruits than than the 96. Drinking well right now but needs to open for an hour or two.
