Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. From Magnum. Drank 2+ glasses over 40 minutes. Very nice as usual, quite yeasty and toasty, citrus, medium full body, chalk, malt. Rock solid as always. 90+ to 91pts.

  • 1998 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. This had minimal pressure on opening, light bead. Mild oxidative character, complex nose, yeast, baked apple pie, moderate yeast, pastry dough, mineral, citrus. The palate is mild plus to moderately oxidative, baked apple, citrus peel, ginger, nice depth, weak bead. This drank well, and I enjoyed the complexity. It would have been interesting to have also seen this more in its youth for comparison. 90+pts.

  • 1999 Alfred Gratien Champagne Brut Millésimé 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose offers pear, apple, yeast, bright minerality, and a bit of floral quality. The palate is just slightly oxidative, medium body, fairly lithe, nice acid, creamy mousse, green orchard fruit, bigger mineral component. More fresh and elegant than the '98 Veuve Clicquot.

  • 2003 Château Fortia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Baron 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color with a 5mm bricked edge. From Magnum, decanted 1/2 the bottle for 2 hours and slow-O'd the rest over 2-3hrs. Drank several glasses over 3 hours. This was really nice, fairly classical nose with dried herbs, cherry, dried earth, perfumed with lavender, cedarbox, cherry and lovely herbs. Initially pepper on the nose that tempers over time. The palate is fresh and lively with lots of pepper initially, garrigue, earthy, bright red and dark red fruits with black cherry, raspberry, nice tannins. This showed well through the evening. MY and group red WOTN.

  • 1994 Château Cos d'Estournel 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Very dark red/purple color with 2-3mm transitional edge. 2hr decant and slow-O for 2 hrs additional. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours plus. Wow, absolutely splendid nose - NOTN, unfortunately the palate could not even begin to approach the nose. The nose is bright with a gorgeous perfume of florals, wood, spice, dark ripe fruits. I could just sit and smell this all night long. The palate tells another story, some might call it austere, and to a point that's probably accurate, woody, some funk, minimal fruit to speak of, and a greenish somewhat aggressive finish with firm and dry tannins. The nose alone is worth 91pts, but I'd rather just smell it. The palate never really evolved much either. Nose 94+ and palate 87pts.

  • 2006 Clarendon Hills Syrah Piggott Range Vineyard 92 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon

Very dark purple color. Decanted 1 hr and slow-O 1 hr. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Lots of eucalyptus up front, black fruits, mocha, tar and some savory notes. The palate is layered and concentrated with lush black fruits, creme de cassis, blackberry, menthol, mocha, lots of glycerin, tar, a little roasted game with silky tannins. Some evolution since a year ago. 92+pts.

  • 2005 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Very dark red/purple color. Had been decanted 2hr and slow-O 2 hrs. Loved the nose initially, really nice sweet creme de cassis and fresh dill, vanillin, boysenberry. The palate has a nice texture with creme de cassis, dust, and tobacco up front. It seems to drop off in the glass though and becomes more spicy and woody with austere drying tannins and some black licorice. I enjoyed this far more up front and that is what my score reflects. Probably at a point to just PNP this.

  • 2004 Mas Doix Priorat Salanques 88 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Very dark purple red color. splash decant and 5hr slow-O. Followed 1 glass over 90 minutes. The nose was pleasant up front, had some nice black fruit, charcoal, chewy and savory in character, graphite, but somewhat sharp and angular. Was better initially and showed too much wood and heat in the finish.

  • 2006 Sine Qua Non Marsanne Mr. K The Straw Man 94 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Amber color. From 375. Drank 1+ glass over 40 minutes. This was sinfully good. Sweet, apricot, candied, pineapple, orange, P-O-G juice. The palate is lively, tropical, ridiculously tasty, tangy, apricot, nectarine, candied pineapple, orange, nice texture - not as unctuous as a Sauterne though, sweet.
