Introduction

A couple of months ago, Gkap/Fred tossed around the idea of drinking some Roulot Perrieres side by side. Seeing a chance to drink 3 roulot perrieres next to each other, we decided on a date. As the date got closer Curry graced us with his presence ;p and Ryan Caughey was in town for work so he joined us as well. Suffice to say I was HYPELEVEL10 as I've never had five Roulot Perrieres side by side and to me Roulot Perrieres is right there at the pinnacle of white burgundy as it gets.

If I was to rank the Perrieres I'd put it as 12/08/01/09 and not including the 02 since it was PREMOX. Really sad the 02 was premox'd as 02 when on has been one of my favorite white burg vintages. I've had the roulot charmes from 02 a couple of times and they've all been incredible.

Flight 1 - A few wines before dinner (4 Notes)

Some of us got off work earlier than expected so we thought we'd take a tour of Fred's new house that's under construction. Fortunately the kitchen/living room area was completely built out, so we hung out for a few hours and tasted through some wines.

Flight 2 - Dinner & Sushi (5 Notes)

We picked Kasen in Fountain Valley for dinner. A well respected traditional sushi joint. We shared the sushi bar with another group of 6 rowdy fellow taiwanese. Not sure I'd go again as we really didn't have much food. Our bill was about $160 a person after tax/tip ($30/btl for corkage) and we ended up with 6 pieces of sushi and a small plate of sashimi. We sat down around 6pm and got out by 7:30pm. Definitely rushed.

  • 2001 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

This wine is drinking so fantastic right now. The acidity has settled down, the fruit has integrated, it's pure and effortless on the palate with just a long lingering finish of mint, fruit. It just sits on your tongue and hangs out letting you know "I'm so damn tasty, I'm just gonna chill here so you remember me until the next sip"

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

I LOVE 2008 Roulot and this is no exception. There's a touch of oak when we first popped and poured but the oak disappears about 30-40 minutes in. It's just this explosive powerhouse of acidity and bright fruit bouncing around full of energy. It's not as soft and refined as the 07 but it's like an energetic young'in hopping along the walls. Drinking really well right now but it'll have the stuffing to last.

Similar to the Tessons we had earlier in the day, it has a heaviness to it where the ripeness of the fruit is the most obvious part of the wine. The wine is really expansive on the palate though with all that fruit and it just coats your mouth. Like the Tessons it could use more acidity, but unlike the tessons there is so much more depth to the flavors behind the wine. One of the best whites I've had from the vintage.

  • 2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Note is very similar to the bottle I had in September. This wine is just intense yet at the same time pure. It has all the acidity and energy of the 08 but not as aggressive. It's subdued in a way that it's lighter on the palate (in a positive way) where it's delicate yet full of everything you want all at the same time. It's almost ethereal as everything just kinda floats but everything you want in the wine is there.

Flight 3 - Post dinner dinner (3 Notes)

Since we were still hungry, we ventured to the Taiwanese temple of Din Tai Fung. We stopped by Legends to pick up more wine and Gkap graciously opened the Rousseau Beze, Fred opened the dujac and Curry opened the Salon. Thanks for the pulls guys! Jwei was nearby so he also dropped by for a couple of glasses. We should probably have just done dinner at DTF. Very few things beat their pork chop fried rice and ultra fresh soup dumplings.

  • 1996 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut

    France, Champagne

I can write a million notes on this and it's always the same. The wine is fantastic. It's one of the best champagnes made in 96. It's a full bodied precise champagne, filled with copious amounts of acidity and fruit.

  • 1993 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Really fantastic meaty, dark stewed red fruit nose. The palate looks to be pointing downwards soon as the finish seems to fade away, but still drinking really well. It's integrated, cool on the palate and the fruit is almost savage in its earthy complexity.

  • 1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Still to me the best 1996 right now. The wine wraps together powerful fruit, slowly simmering 2ndary notes of dark spices and mushroom and this beautiful lingering acidity for a complete package. This wine has so much going on with it but most importantly everything compliments each other perfectly. The bottle I had a year or so ago was my WOTY, this wasn't quite as lofty but it was still really really excellent.
