Flight 1 - White flight - all wines tasted blind (3 Notes)

  • 2013 Veyder-Malberg Riesling Elsarner Brandstatt 89 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Clear, light golden yellow color. Medium intense nose with ripe apple, apricots. Dry, medium- acidity, quite unusual, but interesting aromas, “mostig” (sorry, don’t know the English term for it, maybe fruit wine), tingles a bit on the tongue, ripe fruits, apricot jelly, 12,5% abv. Potential is quite hard to judge for me, but it has certainly years ahead. Very interesting, unusual wine.

  • 2006 Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 87 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Clear, golden yellow color. Medium intense, fully developed nose with lots of petrol. Unusual sweet, so even if it is called dry it has quite amount of residual sugar which makes this wine a bit strange. On the palate quite flat and flabby, medium finish with some ripe fruits. Over time with air some salty minerality shows up, but IMHO it does not really fulfill the requirements of a “Großes Gewächs”. Past Peak, won’t improve anymore so drink up.

  • 2010 Simon Maye & Fils Petite Arvine 90 Points

    Switzerland, Valais, Chamoson

Clear, light golden color. Medium intense, youthful nose with ripe pears. Dry, medium- acidity, high alcohol of 14,3%. When getting warmer it shows the varietal typical saltiness. Good wine starting its drinking window. Potential for 3-5 more years. Very interesting and good wine.

Flight 2 - Red flight - all wines tasted blind (3 Notes)

  • 2014 Stein Spätburgunder Red Light! Kabinett trocken 86 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Clear, raspberry color. You can feel and taste that it is a serious wine and that the winemaker’s intention to create a red “Riesling Kabinett” was somehow obtained. But who needs this wine? For a serious, but easy drinking Pinot it is too expensive and for a complex “meditation” Pinot it is too simple and light. Neither fish nor fowl… It has Potential for 5+ years. Will open next bottle in 1-2 years.

  • 2007 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    *** Tasted blind ***
Clear, pale ruby red color. Medium intense, quite reductive nose, some cacao powder. Dry, spicy notes, pressure on the palate. Complete different story than the “Red Light!” drunk before. Good Burgundy village I thought. But for a Grand Cru it is certainly disappointing. It lacks complexity and potential. It is at its Peak now and won’t improve.

  • 1990 Clos Mogador Priorat 93 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Clear, medium purple-garnet red. Restrained nose, which opens up with air. Wine was popped and poured, but it will definitively benefit from 1h decanting as it develops in the glass from minute to minute! Dry, good acidity, present but silky tannin, elegant very nice tertiary aromas, all of its fat has gone, quite elegant, slate notes, long. After 25 years this wine is at its peak and it will certainly stay there for several more years. Wonderful experience and a sign that great Prioratos needs a lot of time and can age very well.

Flight 3 - Schwegler flight (4 Notes)

This was an eye opener for me. Never thought that somebody in Württemberg can create red wine like this!

  • NV Weingut Albrecht Schwegler d'r Oifache 88 Points

    Germany, Württemberg

Hmm, what should I say: This is definitively the best red entry level wine in Württemberg I have ever tasted so far. Even if it contains some amount of Trollinger  Aged in used barriques which gives this wine a good and solid structure. According to the AP Number this wine is filled in 2015 and has certainly potential for 5+ years. Good stuff!

  • 2011 Weingut Albrecht Schwegler Granat 90 Points

    Germany, Württemberg

Cuvee of Zweigelt, Lemberger, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Cabertin. Clear medium purple color. Restrained nose, some unripe fruit. Dry, complex but with some unripe notes on the palate as well. My first impression: Tried and failed! You can feel, that the vintner tried to create a complex, new world style wine. But for me it is still easily detectable as a German wine.
As I never had such a wine before, it was hard to judge its potential and how it will develop.
But after tasting the 1999 vintage I must admit: Keep your hands of this wine and let it sleep for at least 15 years and you will be rewarded with one of the best German reds besides Pinot! At the moment only 90+

  • 1999 Weingut Albrecht Schwegler Granat 92 Points

    Germany, Württemberg

Clear, deep purple/ruby color. Medium+ intense nose, spicy and fruity. Still incredibly young. This should be a German red? Really unbelievable! Dry, very well integrated acidity and tannin, complex, long, still some unripe/green notes. Great potential for 10+ years. Would be very interesting to taste this wine in 10 years.

  • 2003 Weingut Albrecht Schwegler Solitär 93 Points

    Germany, Württemberg

This wine officially don’t appear on the wine list and is extremely rare. Thanks to the guys for letting me taste this! So far only produced in two vintages (1999 and 2003, if I recall correctly). Seven years (!) in new barriques.
Clear, deep purple color. Intense, youthful nose with some lactic notes and lots of blackberry and cassis. Dry, still veeery young, almost still fruit juice, reminds me of a great Chile Carmere. Oak is perfectly integrated, good and solid backbone of acidity and tannin. At the moment this wine is impressive. I had never thought, that somebody in Württemberg is capable of creating such a wine! The question is: How will it age and what happens when the bunch of fruity will blend in? I don’t know, but deducing from my experience with the 2011 and 1999 Granat I would expect something great coming. Do not open it the next 10 years. I wish I could get some bottles of this stuff to taste it in 10 and 20 years…
