Introduction

This tasting featured a trio of old Inglenook wines and a talk about the history of the Inglenook Winery and Napa Valley in general.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2014 Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc Rutherford 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Very pale green. 2oz pour. Very similar to a recent bottle. Grapefruit, lime, good acid cut, average finish. A solid offering. 88+pts.

  • 2012 Duxoup Charbono Frediani Vineyard 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark red color. 2oz pour over 45 minutes. Fun little wine, and rather tasty. The nose intrigues with a mix of fruits, boysenberry, hints of blueberry, plum, fuzzy cedarbox. The palate is on the lighter side of medium, nice soft fruits, blue and red, a slight green streak, good acidity, spice and soft tannins. The attack is very nice with a little hole toward the end.

  • 2012 Inglenook Rubicon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

VEry dark red color. Decanted for 3.5hrs, drank a 3.5 oz pour over 90 minutes. I like what I see here. this shows promise. Very restrained, not over the top in any way. The fruit is pretty, the oak is controlled, nice texture, good length. On the nose I find black currants, licorice, mulberry, cedar, hints of strawberry. The palate is medium full bodied, sophisticated, black currants, dusty tannins, cedar, elegant. INice to try in its youth, and I look forward to seeing where they go. 91+ to 92(+?)pts.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1967 Inglenook Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 86 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Medium brick red throughout. PNP and filtered into decanter. 3oz pour over an hour. Still held some interest at first, started to break down after about 20 minutes. The nose has dried red fruits, dried cherry, brown sugar, and then develops a distinct celery root note as it comes apart. The palate is quite light bodied, dried red fruits, sour cherry, tart cherry, old leather, resolved tannins, olive tapenade, still some good acid, medium- short finish. Fun to try and interesting, but barely keeping its head above water.

  • 1968 Inglenook Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Flawed

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Unfortunately this was just too far gone. Oxidized, vinegar. Thin, brown sugar, celery, caramel, sort of port-like on the nose, but not in a good way.

  • 1985 Inglenook Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reunion Reserve Cask 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark red color with a 1cm transitional bricked margin. Drank a 3oz pour over an hour. By far the best of the grouping, this was drinking very well. Shows an attractive nose of dried flowers, dust, cedar, funk, earth, red fruits. The palate is very nice with red fruits, bright red berries, spices, some wood, good acid, medium body, fine grained dusty tannins and a medium finish. This was in good shape and a pleasure to drink.

Closing

As with many old wines, some are better than others, but it is always fun and educational no matter what.
