Flight 1 (44 Notes)

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Lemon and biscuit with some ginger snaps as well. Nicely refreshing on a warm day, there is good cut through the acidity and a touch of sweetness that rounds the palate out. Very nice.

  • 2012 O'Leary Walker Riesling Watervale 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

Lime, floral, mineral, chalk and some herb and orange. Good acidity on the palate, this is holding its youthful fruit well, giving it approachability. Good length - no hurry to drink this.

  • 2012 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Expressive nose out of the glass with orange, apricot, lemon, peach and slate. The palate has some richness behind the fruit and there is some texture and grip as well. Already drinking well, but there should be plenty of space for it to develop further.

  • 2012 Grosset Riesling Springvale Watervale 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

Bath salts, roses and graphite. There is real cut and composure on the palate with the fruit and acidity well integrated but providing good interest and spark. Very good length. I thought that this was a step in front of the Grosset Polish Hill at the current point.

  • 2012 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Lemon cordial, orange peel and minerals. Medium depth and intensity on the palate before a rush of acidity towards the finish. Really feels like it needs time and I hope to try it again and see.

  • 2012 Pikes Riesling Traditionale 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Floral with musk and lemon. Really good purity on the palate, the balance here is excellent with push and drive from the acidity and the fruit sweetness countering it with style. Not quite as much depth as I'd like to be able to love this, but it may well come with time.

  • NV Josef Chromy Riesling PEPIK Sekt 89 Points

    Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley

Lemon and lime with florals and some earthiness. A little sweetness on the palate, but there is good lemon acidity. Medium length, this is nice drinking in an easy style while still having some points of interest.

  • 1994 Petaluma Riesling Flawed

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Faded, still had some interest but ultimately it was a bit too far gone.

  • 2000 Petaluma Riesling Flawed

    Badly oxidized.

  • 2002 Petaluma Riesling Hanlin Hill 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Screwcap. Spice, orange, mineral and popcorn aromas. Lovely balance, the fruit and acidity are youthful still, but the wine shows great composure and balance. A great Riesling, maybe one of the last for this producer, and under screwcap well stored bottles should continue to impress over quite a few years to come.

  • 2009 Petaluma Riesling Hanlin Hill 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Violet, lime, ozone, spice and orange. The palate is rich and slightly bitter with phenolics, with some good texture but without the composure and purity that I'd like to see. Nice but not something I'd quickly return to again.

  • 2012 Petaluma Riesling Hanlin Hill 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

This has started to settle down after some early showings that I was less than impressed with. Lemon, graphite, chalk and florals. There is a quite sweet element to the palate, but the acidity sweeps through nicely and there is good depth to the fruit. Would like to see where this goes as it develops, hopefully continuing upwards!

  • 2010 Helm Riesling Half Dry 87 Points

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Nutty, floral and coconut aromas. Medium bodied, with light sweetness. The length drops away a little bit early. Holding on but not developing with age, likely this is a wine best drunk early.

  • 2010 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Riesling Kabinett 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Plenty of sulphur, tropical fruit, orange and apricot. The palate shows plenty of sweetness along with a good line of acidity that helps given the riper nature of the fruit. I like the fullness and weight here and I'll leave my other bottle for another 4-5 years.

  • 2010 Kobe Winery Riesling Benediction 84 Points

    Japan, Kansai, Hyōgo

Heavily grassy with herbal and tobacco notes along with some earth and celery - plenty going on but to be honest it was a bit of a struggle to find pleasure when it was all put together. The palate is both sweet and grippy, with moderate depth and length. An interesting curio but no more than that for me.

  • 2011 Red Newt Cellars Riesling Tango Oaks 88 Points

USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake

Orange peel, peach, smoke and lime. The off-dry style works well with the fruit profile, a line of acidity is present and is sufficient but doesn't quite give the wine enough of a spark to rate it higher.

  • 2012 Vineland Estates Winery Riesling Elevation St. Urban 90 Points

Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Niagara Escarpment VQA

Green apple, lemon, smoke and lemon. The palate is quite delicate, with the fruit showing lovely purity and lithe flavours. There are signs of the residual sugar, but the medium acidity keeps it feeling well balanced. Medium length, if there was a little more depth and length it would be even more impressive.

  • 2009 Knappstein Riesling Ackland Vineyard 89 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

Mineral, floral musk and bath salts. Clean acid flows, medium length. Still very early days for this wine.

  • 2009 Clonakilla Riesling 89 Points

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Lime, pear, florals and some honey. Really nice clean and bright palate profile, with good lifting acidity that cuts through the palate well. I wonder if with further age the acid might stick out more, but for now it is ticking along well.

  • 2009 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Kerosene and toast with lemon and grape aromas. The palate is very rounded and the brightness has started to soften out. Feels like this is close to hitting its peak.

  • 2009 Best's Great Western Riesling 89 Points

Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western

Graphite, peach and a light herb note. The palate feels quite round but it still flows well. I think that this will be at its peak in around 4-5 years.

  • 2009 Kilikanoon Riesling Mort's Block 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

Herbs, slate, floral and spice notes. Acidity cuts through sharply, with a very light sweetness throughout that helps to balance things out. Still very young and I think that it will continue developing well.

  • 2012 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Hinterhaus 90 Points

Lime, apricot, fresh florals and lemon. Intense on the palate, with really good texture and depth. Dry but the fruit intensity fills the mouth and leaves you wanting another look at it.

  • 2010 Frankland Estate Riesling Isolation Ridge Vineyard 91 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River

Floral, laundry power, spice and lemon. The flavour intensity is very good and there is great structure and verve to the fruit. Very persistent, this is still very young but I really enjoyed it.

  • 2013 Kanta Riesling Echunga Vineyard 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

Coconut, musk and yellow florals. Palate feels quite ripe while finishing dry into its medium length. Not particularly distinctive in character but drinks decently enough.

  • 2007 Jim Barry Riesling The Florita 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

  • 2002 Pikes Riesling Reserve 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Licorice, marshmallow, lemon and some floral notes. Acid sticks out a little bit here, with the fruit feeling a little bit too held back on this bottle. Still quite good and I wonder if it may come together with a bit more time.

  • 2006 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile 89 Points

    France, Alsace

Honey, peach, apricot and a little earthy note. Really good acidity and pure fruit, there is a little bit of that earthy note poking through on the palate as well and I wonder if this bottle is right. Still tasted pretty good so rated as is!

  • 1998 Rockford Riesling Hand Picked Eden Valley 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Marmalade, honey and musk. This bottle was heading downhill but it is still holding on to some rounded fruit and still has decent length. Drink now.

  • 2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

AP #19 14. Lemon, mineral, orange and musk. Really pure fruit on the palate, the sugar blends in well and allows the delicate side of the wine to shine. Still has plenty of detail and depth. Delicious but patience will be well rewarded.

  • 2012 Kalleske Viognier Plenarius 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Blind but I picked it from the colour as it was being poured. Orange, rosewater, apricot and musk. Really good acidity and texture on the palate, the grip works really well with the touch of fruit sweetness. Doesn't seem to have developed much from 3-4 years ago and I think it is probably best drunk now.

    France, Alsace

Mandarin, orange, apricot and some straw with some talc as well. Nice balance of sweetness and mineral acidity. Good length, stretching out in the glass and showing more with air. No hurry to drink this.

  • 1983 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Hattenheimer Nußbrunnen Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

Funky earth, lemon and some iodine that sounds odd but works well with the sweetness. I like the balance here, with light sweetness and some persistent fruit character, along with the funk to give it interest. Very nice condition bottle.

  • 2015 Clos du Tue-Boeuf Touraine La Butte 88 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine

Charcoal, cherry, undergrowth and a meaty note. Refreshing acidity on the palate, with plenty of the earth and funk from the nose coming through as a very savoury palate. I like the interest and style.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Moulin-à-Vent Clos de Champ de Cour Château des Jacques 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

Blind. Meaty, graphite, rose, cherry and spice. Concentrated tannins and plenty of acidity on the palate. I found it a little lacking it enjoyment and overall composure, but it seems to have the structure to age well and it may well come around with a bit more time.

  • 2003 Two Hands Brave Faces 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Screwcap. 65% Shiraz, 35% Grenache. Pepper, blackcurrant, raspberry jam and tar. Sweet fruit on the palate, this is still very youthful, with the structure holding up well. Decent length, just not very complex still.

  • 1998 Henschke Cyril Henschke 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Cedar, menthol, pencil, redcurrant and charcoal. In a holding pattern on the palate, there is really good structure along with red and black fruits still showing well. Good length and balance, this is still developing and has plenty more to give.

  • 2009 Giaconda Nebbiolo 90 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Blackcurrant, musk, cherry and ash on the nose. The tannins are present but are fine and work well with the savoury styled fruit. Carries well into a very good length finish. Still young, this has plenty of time left to develop and show what its got.

  • 2013 Rockford Shiraz Basket Press 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Licorice, vanilla, sweet red fruit and toast. The palate shows quite a bit of ripe fruit and it feels like it needs time to settle down and while there is some interest now I think it should get more expressive as it takes on depth and dimension with more time.
